The Ballad of Old Blue
Born 1961, F, from Kalispell, MT, United StatesThe Ballad of Old Blue
I think I was eleven,
that special Christmas day.
When a present, I didn’t expect,
came along my way.
He came from the pound,
a pup, just doing time in jail.
When he jumped from the box,
he eagerly wagged his tail.
Old blue, I loved him,
more than I can say.
Deep inside my heart,
he will always stay.
We became fast friends.
Little Blue and I.
Wherever I wandered,
Blue, he was, close by.
My fishing partner,
on lazy summer days.
We passed our time together
in a number of ways.
Old blue, I loved him,
more than I can say.
Deep inside my heart,
he will always stay.
Always Blue, stayed close
he was my special guide.
That winter I was so sick,
he never left my side.
All through the school years,
Blue had a permanent place.
Patiently waiting outside,
just to see my face.
Old blue, I loved him,
more than I can say.
Deep inside my heart,
he will always stay.
When I went to college,
I had to leave Blue behind.
At my parent’s home, Blue waited for me.
A truer friend, I’d never find.
I finished school and got a good job.
The first thing on my list
Was to grab my old Blue,
I had to take him with.
Old blue, I loved him,
more than I can say.
Deep inside my heart,
he will always stay.
He became my best roommate
and my closest friend.
A friendship like ours,
really had no end.
One day I met a young woman,
Who I knew would someday be my bride.
Blue wasn’t jealous, but came along
on each and every ride.
By then, Blue was growing old,
not the pup he used to be.
His growing old,
was so hard for me to see.
Old blue, I loved him,
more than I can say.
Deep inside my heart,
he will always stay.
I was alone with him
that awful winter day he died.
The tears poured down my cheeks,
as I broke down and cried.
I took him back to my parent’s home
and buried him in the backyard.
I’ve never had to do anything,
even close to being that hard.
Old blue, I loved him,
more than I can say.
Deep inside my heart,
he will always stay.
The next Spring, I got married.
We took our wedding vows outside,
and close to that very spot,
you won’t believe what we spied.
Both my new wife and I,
had a big lump in our chests.
A rose bush was blooming,
where Blue was laid rest.
Old blue, I loved him,
more than I can say.
Deep inside my heart,
he will always stay.
I know it was Blue
and that he had found a way
to be with his best friend,
on a very special day.

02/11/2023The unconditional affection that a pet dog offers is indeed very prescious. A pity that they have such short lifespans. I also miss my pet dog Danny Boy. Would give world just to see him once more and give him a big hug.
