Dead Love
Born 2009, F, from Nuevo Leon, MexicoTuesday November 9th, 2021, Pennsylvania USA, brown and red leaves all over the floor, frozen lakes, barely anyone around. Vendetta “Vanny” Lee, born 2004, 17 years old. Tall, porcelain colored skin, dark brown hair and pale green eyes, walking hand in hand with 17-year-old Lenny Andromeda born 2004. Medium height, light skinned, dirty blond hair, gunmetal blue eyes. As they swung their hand back and forth to match their walk, they could feel that something wasn’t right. Something lingering in the back of their minds. Maybe it was the fact that everyone else was in class except for their school. Or the fact that the sun was out in November in Pennsylvania, or maybe it was that they were the only ones out in the park at the moment. Lenny was never the silent type; he would always go on and on about specific topics only stopping when Vanny pointed out he was doing it. In a strange way that's one of the things Vanny loved most about Lenny. This is in fact what Lenny was doing right now, rambling on and on about how excited he was for winter. Vanny was listening whilst also sneaking quick glances at his watch, 2:56pm school was over, and most people would be headed home soon. It was just that Vanny could not shake the feeling that there was something wrong. He looked over at Lenny, as they crossed the small wooden bridge to get over to the other side of the pond. Vanny thought it was about time to leave, Lenny’s mom said that she wanted them back by 3:30.
“Lenny.” Vanny said softly, but he hadn’t heard him.
“Lenny.” Vanny spoke against a bit louder Lenny stopped and turned his head to look at him,
“I was doing it again, wasn’t I?” he remarked with a small laugh, Vanny nodded his head a small grin on his face.
“It’s time to head back now.” Vendetta explained.
“Ok.” Lenny said a bit disappointed, he never really got along with his parents that much. Lenny slowly changed their course of direction to the dark metal exit gates.
As they got to the gates they stopped at the crosswalk, it was a rather short one. But you have to be careful because the cars coming from it come from directly behind the turn, so if they aren't paying attention, they might try to slam down on their brakes but accidentally hit a person. But most people already know about this so there hasn’t been an accident there in years.
Vanny glances down at his watch again, 3:01pm he then tries to just walk across when all of a sudden Lenny pulls him back by his shoulder.
“What?” he exclaimed a bit in a joking manner.
“You have to actually look both ways idiot!” Lenny explained as if Vanny was a five-year-old.
“I don’t want you to get hit.” he adds and cocks his head at Vanny,
“Would that really be a bad thing?” Vanny whispers under his breath, Lenny smacks him across the back of his head, not enough to actually hurt but enough to make a point.
“No.” he basically growls at him. Vanny rolls his eyes and mutters a quick
“Just kidding.” while smiling. Lenny interlocks their arms together much to Vanny’s delight and makes him look both ways twice. Once they make sure it’s clear they take a couple of steps forwards,
“See now wasn’t that ea-” Lenny states, but he doesn’t get to finish the sentence before a giant yellow and black school bus zooms around the corner going much faster than it’s supposed to. And before the bus driver even has time to slam down on the breaks it’s too late. The bus hits them with a loud Smack! Making both of them fly forwards. Then the entire windshield is covered in blood. All the high schoolers on the bus start screaming at the top of their lungs and a couple of the sensible ones start dialing 911. The bus driver who still had his foot on the gas pedal accidentally runs them over with another loud crunch. After he yanks his foot from off the gas and onto the brake he just sits at the wheel in shock, not being able to register that he just murdered two seventeen-year-old. The time on Vanny’s watch read 3:03pm and that was the time that Vendetta Lee and Lenny Andromeda were murdered on a Tuesday afternoon on November 9th.
Police sirens could be heard in the distance, and Vanny was starting to feel lightheaded as he woke up. He looked around him to see who he thought was Lenny’s legs sticking out from the bus. His probably mangled face was hidden. Vanny started to panic, his eyes went wide as he stared at the love of his life dead. How could this have happened? Why him? Why Lenny? He felt like he wanted to die, he didn’t know how he could possibly still exist when Lenny was dead. Lenny sat up. It must have startled Vendetta a lot because he was now crouched 6 feet away from the bus. Lenny, or ‘dead’ Lenny had just sat up through the bus, he just went straight through it. Lenny looked from side to side and then he saw what Vanny had failed to see, another pair of legs right next to Lenny that undoubtedly belonged to him. They both stared at them wide eyed. That's when Vanny noticed that Lenny's normally blue eyes are now white. Fully white. His skin and clothes even emitted this white glow that made him seem ghostly.
“A-are you dead?” Vanny asked him, who finally turned his head and looked at him. Vanny's voice sounded so shaky that he barely even recognized it.
“I-I don’t t-think so.” he whispered back, denial ran through his voice so clearly you may have thought that's where it lived. His blank eyes somehow filled with sorrow. Vanny wanted to hold him, comfort him, just do anything to make him feel better. That’s exactly what Vanny did. He held Lenny close to him and they just sat there, tears that they could not see, hear, or feel appeared in both of their eyes. Vanny slowly stood them up, stabilizing both of them. He knew Lenny knew; they were both dead; neither one of them was willing to admit it. But Vanny knew that it needed to be said,
“We're both dead then huh.” Vanny stated it wasn’t a question, it was a statement. He was trying his best to act casually and failing miserably.
“Guess so.” Lenny responded, playing with his own hands. Vanny stood up and looked around, trying to regain his memory of what just happened. They were crossing then… THE BUS. The bus had run them over, as soon as Vendetta realized this he was pissed, that stupid bus driver had just taken the life of his only love. He wanted to punch it; he did punch it. It didn't do anything as he saw his hand go through the bus like a hot knife slicing through butter. He stood there for a second glaring menacingly at the bus. That's when he grabbed Lenny’s hand, yanked him upwards and stormed off towards Lenny’s house, the police were still at the crime scene.
They waited on Lenny's couch for around thirty minutes, at some point his cat had jumped up onto the couch through Lenny and he had jumped up so high he went through the roof. They were going to have to get used to that. That's when finally, his mom got the call, the call that would explain what they both already knew. Vendetta and Lenny were dead, they had died roughly thirty minutes ago, and they were gone forever. Lenny took this hard seeing his mother fall apart right in front of him, even if he didn’t get along with her that well when he was alive, he wanted to scream ‘I’m right here! Look behind you, I'm here!’ was what he didn’t say he knew she wouldn’t hear it, he knew that, so he didn’t. He didn’t scream at her, Vanny pulled him into a side hug. Then they left.
As soon as they stepped outside something felt off, not as when they were in the park, but it made both of them anxious. All of a sudden, a bright light appeared in front of them out of nowhere. Lenny screamed a little which made Vanny giggle. What they weren't expecting was the bright light to just start talking to them,
“Vendetta Lee and Lenny Andromeda. We have looked over your lives' and have seen that you both truly deserve good.” it spoke, Vanny stared at it in disbelief his mouth hanging open a bit while Lenny was just frozen solid as if he were a statue.
“You have until the end of your funeral to decide whether you want to remain here as a ghost forever with your family wandering around the world.” the bright light paused, “Or you could join the rest of the afterlife in eternal bliss.” the light continued. Vanny and Lenny exchanged nervous glances.
“So, God, heaven, hell. None of that actually exists?” Lenny finally spoke, breaking the awkward silence.
“No.” the light said bluntly. Lenny closed his mouth instantly and continued staring, processing what he had just found out.
“So let me get this straight,” Vendetta started, “We can either be here with our family roaming around the world forever. Or we could go be in “eternal bliss” as you put it. But may I ask what exactly is eternal bliss?” Vanny said in a challenging tone.
“For you two, being together for the rest of time. No one else will bother you if you do not want them to.” the light responded, and immediately Vanny’s mind began to betray him and Lenny. He started to think about how wonderful that would be, never being bothered, just being with the one he loved forever. As much as he tried to snap himself out of it, it was still in the back of his mind.
“And we have until our funeral?” Lenny but in, interrupting Vanny’s unwanted thoughts.
“Yes.” the light said again. Lenny huffed out a strong sigh and looked down. That’s when the light abruptly disappeared without saying another word.
It had been two days after the death of Lenny and Vendetta. Since then, they had fully figured out what had happened to them. Lenny was struggling with the newly acquired information, while Vanny was trying his best to politely bring up how happy he was with being able to be with Lenny for the rest of his “un-life” (as he put it). Now Lenny wasn’t a very happy person when he was alive, he very much wanted to be dead. Now that he is dead, he is just starting to realize that maybe he was in the wrong. Vanny being the selfish person that he is, wants to go to that afterlife and has made it his mission to convince Lenny to want the same by November 14th. Their funeral. Vanny’s parents had been tight on money so when Lenny’s parents suggested a combined funeral, they didn’t miss that opportunity. It was now three days before the funeral, that's what Vanny had, three days. They mostly wandered around the town; they never visited the park even when it was their favorite place when they were alive. They just couldn’t go back, even Vanny understood that one. He had tried to talk about it with Lenny that day but all he got was a quiet ‘I’ll think about it.’ From him.
Next day and Vanny tried again, the clock was ticking, and he was worried. Oh, he so badly wanted this, he was desperate for it. He wanted to spend the rest of time with Lenny. He just wanted Lenny to want that as well. He again tried to talk with him about it, this time when Lenny tried to dismiss it, Vanny got a bit mad.
“Come on, you have to make a decision soon.” He had told him, “I love you; you know that! I Just want to be happy with you. In our paradise. I promise you’ll feel so much better if you just let it go.” Lenny looked at him, he was silent for a moment.
“I’m thinking about it, I promise I am.” He pushed out, “Don’t get me wrong I would love that, but I still need… a bit more time.” He continued to explain, his voice shaky.
So that's what Vanny gave him, time. And soon enough the day of their funeral came. It was cloudy, and when Vanny checked the watch on his father's wrist it read 12:16pm. Vanny huffed out a sigh and glanced over at Lenny tears silently ran down from his white eyes. Vanny reached over and held onto his hand tightly, he squeezed a bit more not expecting much in return but absolutely ecstatic when Lenny squeezed back. As the funeral neared its end Lenny was finally accepting that he could move on, be with Vanny forevermore. He was secretly rejoicing. Soon there were only two, two people left standing at their graves. Two people no one would see again forever gone to the mortal world. And by that time both of them had accepted that. Finally realizing that they could move on, leave together, never be apart for the rest of time. That's when the light came back violently appearing in front of them, before Vanny even got a word in it spoke
“You do not have to say anything, I know. You both chose to move on.” it was calm and neutral soothing if you didn’t understand what it was saying. Vendetta and Lenny didn’t say anything, they shared a quick look and Lenny nodded his head. He was no longer crying.
“Step forward into me and you will be free of this world.” the light spoke again. Vendetta, still holding on to Lenny's hand, took the first step predictably, a great sensation filled him as he became one with the light Lenny soon following behind him. Moments later they were gone, never to exist in this life again, to be with each other forever dead. 12:20pm.
