The Cow and Her Hula Hoop
Born 1980, F, from Eagan, MN, United StatesThis story is about a cow.
She has a purple and green and blue and very spectacular hula hoop.
She likes her hula hoop. She keeps it clean. She never leaves it out when she's done playing with it. The hula hoop has a special spot. She keeps it on a pretty hook in the living room.
Everyone who goes to her house sees it right away.
The cow, of course, wants her guests to see it.
Because, if they see it, they will ask her to...
Demonstrate!
She is quite pleased to show off her hula hoop skills.
And the truth is that she is good!
She can keep the hula hoop going for 1 hour, 3 minutes, and 42 seconds.
Her guests are often amazed. Her guests are frequently awed.
But one day, something truly devastating happened. This is her story.
When the cow woke up, her door was open. Her purple and green and blue and very spectacular hula hoop was missing!
The cow was shocked. Naturally.
Five minutes later, she was still just standing there, shocked.
Seven minutes later, she was outside. “Help! I've been robbed!” she bellowed.
Her neighbors came outside. One of them called the police.
The police questioned everyone. They searched the cow's house.
“We won't give up. We'll find your hula hoop,” promised an officer.
The cow and her neighbors and her friends and her cousins searched all day.
They did not find the hula hoop.
The cow was exhausted when she finally went to bed. She was upset, but she knew that she had to sleep.
The next morning, the hula hoop was again in its place! A note was attached.
I am sorry for taking your purple and green and very spectacular hula hoop without asking you. I just wanted to see if I could do it. I can. But it wasn't right to take it, and I hope that you will forgive me.
Love,
Your Little Sister
The cow was shocked again. Three minutes later, she wasn't shocked anymore. She was thinking. She was sad that her sister had taken her hula hoop, but happy that she had returned it. She almost wanted to pout, because perhaps she wasn't really that special. She was not the only cow with talent. But then, she had a very cool idea. One cow with a hula hoop - even a spectacular hula hoop - is still just one. Two cows doing the hula at the same time is something so amazing that it can give a bit of happiness.
And everyone wants happiness.
So, she went to see her sister to say, "I forgive you, Sis." Then she told her sister about her idea. They went to the store and bought a green and silver and gold and very splendid hula hoop.
The cows started practicing every day. One sunny Tuesday, they went to the local nursing home. They said to the receptionist, “Do you think your residents want some happiness? We have a little show prepared that is guaranteed to make others smile.”
They told the receptionist all about their show, and the receptionist liked the idea very much.
“Come back next week at 10:00 a.m. We will have everyone ready in our community room.”
So, the cows did! They put on their amazing show, and just as they’d hoped, they made the audience smile. The cows were asked to come again the following week, and the week after that. The residents at the nursing home started looking forward to the shows. They told their family members, and their family members came to watch.
Very soon, the whole town knew about the cows. And as far as I know, the cows are still putting on shows and still making others smile.
