The Monkey and The Owl
Born 1978, M, from CONNECTICUT, United StatesThe Monkey, the Owl and the Zoo Animals
By Daniel J. Hartz
Monkey was a wily animal of sorts. He always liked to play tricks on the other animals he lived with at the zoo.
Owl always wondered who would be next, and if she would ever somehow be the butt of monkey's shenanigans.
But, this little monkey was not always that wise, and when he would hear the owl hoo, he thought the owl was entertained by the monkey. He thought the owl was asking "Who shall we get next?" He thought that owl was in on the adventure, when in reality, owl was just trying to warn the other animals about monkey's mischief, for what monkey did not know was that the smaller animals would scurry, and hide at the sound of owl's hoo, and this would wake the larger animals, in a butterfly effect and fashion. Sometimes monkey got away with his shenanigans just by the skin of his teeth, and he was lucky that he did, for some of the animals at the zoo would find him a tasty treat. Owl did not want to see this happen.
Monkey was a pest for sure, but owl knew in reality that monkey did not intentionally do harm to the other animals. At the same time, the other animals did not like to be the recipient of monkey's mischief, such as having their ears smushed with left-over bananas, or having their breakfast, lunch, or dinner hidden from them. Owl had been devising a plan to save the other animals from monkey's mayhem, as well as saving monkey from himself in the long-run. Monkey would have no one to fool this go-around,
Monkey, thought he was the smartest, most clever animal at the zoo, far more intelligent than all the other animals, and monkey thought he always surprised the other animals with his tricks. In actuality monkey was loud and boisterous and the animals always knew when monkey was up to his mischief, at least before, and always afterwards, but never during the carrying out of his scheme for that was when monkey was at his quietest. The major problem with catching monkey was you never knew who monkey would target next, or why.
So, owl went to all the other animals and the reply was always the same.
"He doesn't appreciate us," the other animals cried.
"Let's see if monkey will like having the jokes thrown back at him," some retorted.
All the animals of the zoo knew that monkey knew how to break out of his cage at night, when monkey would play all his tunes of mockery. The only other animals that were out of cages at the zoo were the free birds like Owl. And all the animals of the zoo respected Owl, for Owl had saved the zoo many years ago from a brush fire, by warning the night staff.
Owl's plan was to have all the free birds unlock the cages of the other animals with their beaks. The other animals were told to collect their scraps of food from the night before which would be used to fill monkey's cage to the tilt. It would take time, but if the birds, owl, and the zoo animals worked in unison, it could be done before monkey came sauntering back. For tonight it seemed that monkey was going to try to prank the alligators at the farthest point in the zoo from his cage, and the alligators had their role too, to play like they had no idea of what was going on.
After his prank of filling the alligator haven with tons of banana peels so that all the alligators could do is nothing but slip and slide, monkey decided to head back to his cage, a little tired on this night. Little did he know he would not be able to sleep in his cage tonight, and when all the other animals saw Monkey's reaction, they in unison, would make a horrifying primal sound telling monkey they had enough of his mischief, for they knew that monkey was of the easily scared sort when he heard loud noises. The animals would warn monkey not to play tricks on any of them again. Hopefully monkey would heed their warning. However what the other animals did not realize is that when monkey returned and saw his cage filled, seeing all the other animals around, monkey would actually laugh in delight, for he was wondering when the other animals would think about him enough to play a trick on him, as much as he thought of the other animals. Monkey actually shrieked in delight.
"I played tricks on you all to show you how much I love you all and to show you all I was thinking of you. Now I know you all love me just as much."
And with that all the animals laughed with their most delightful primal sounds and knew they would be waiting for more of monkey's pranks.
