Camilla Karas, who had just turned 12, grabbed her backpack and walked out the door. She was in sixth grade and loved science. Camilla or Cami as her friends called her, couldn’t wait to go to school today. They had a 3D science poster of the solar system due. For most kids that wouldn’t have been something they looked forward to but it was for Cami. Cami had woken up at 6:49 in the morning (extra early) so that she could talk to her friend Kennedy for a bit before the bus came. Cami’s friend Kennedy, who was also 12, was waiting for her with a soccer ball and an excited grin. Kennedy squealed as Cami approached. “Eeee! Guess what!” Cami raised one eyebrow that said, how-can-you-be-this-energetic-at-6:45-in-the-morning. She had a very talkative eyebrow. “I’m getting a dog!” She shouted to Cami. This news made Cami say, “Yay!” Even if she was half asleep. “Maybe Rosa Barks and your dog can be friends!” Rosa Barks was Cami’s Brussels Griffon. (If you don’t know what a Brussels Griffon is then look them up, they are very cute.) Kennedy said, “It’s gonna be a male pug and we are going to name him either 50 Scent, Spark Pug, or Hairy Pawter. What’s your fav?” Cami listened and started laughing after each one, harder every time. She finally said, “50 Scent is my vote. If you do choose 50 Scent then you have to get him a doggy chain.” Kennedy nodded and said, “So true.”
BOOM!! A burst of light blasted down from the sky! Kennedy and Cami fell to the ground with a thump.
Tria, who was going to turn 13 in a few days, yawned and pulled her head up. Tria had fallen asleep in her math book. She had been studying until 1:00 am. Today was her math test that would be worth ⅓ of her grade! Tria checked her clock. It was 7:25 and time for her to wake up. She had been having this awesome dream about a paradise. There were palm trees, exotic animals, and coconuts. Tria went over to her closet and chose a light purple blouse to wear with some camouflage pants. She walked down the stairs and her mom said, “Tria! You should be at the bus stop by now!” Tria was very confused. It was only 7:30 and her bus came at 8:35. “What?”
“Daylight savings!” Tria gasped and ran out the door. She ran to the playground where her friend Amelia was waiting. The playground was only 7 feet from the bus stop so they could easily move if the bus came. Amelia, who had been 13 for a month, was talking to herself. “What are you doing?” Tria asked. Amelia waved when she saw Tria and replied, “I have to memorize the first 15 digits of pi.”
“Let me guess, 3.14 something?” Amelia glanced down at her paper and said, “Actually it’s 3.14159265358979 but I keep having to look at the paper.”
“You’ll get there. Trust me with practice and lots of focus you’ll be able to-” All of a sudden, a huge burst of light came. It was directed right at the girls and they both hit the ground.
Alex (9), Amelia’s little sister, was running out the door as fast as she could. She did not want to miss the bus. But that’s when she was hit with the light as well. Alex hit the grass and blacked out.
Tessa, (12) was sitting on the grass planning on skipping school and reading her book all day. But that’s when she saw Tria and Amelia, (her neighbors) get hit with what looked like lightning. Tessa ran to them and said, “Wha-” But that’s when she was hit with it too.
Amelia woke up first and said, “Tria!” She helped Tria up and suddenly remembered something. “ALEX!” She took off in a hurry, sprinting to her house.
Tria meanwhile, was very dizzy and kind of stumbling all over the place. She was trying to get over to Camilla and Kennedy, (Her parents and Kennedy’s were good friends, so she knew her quite well) who were also at the bus stop but felt very, very woozy. She tripped and hit the grass hard. Again. She laid there motionless for one minute and then got up. Her head pounded but not as bad as it had before. Camilla got up and said, “What happened?” Kennedy rubbed her head and said, “I don’t know.” she hopped up and saw the bus coming. “Come on guys!” She decided she should run and tell the bus driver that her friends might be a little late. That’s when she started running 4,937 mph (miles per hour). She stopped abruptly and felt very warm. She was on fire! Kennedy immediately laid on the ground and rolled around. The bus left and Kennedy stood up again. Luckily her clothes hadn’t gotten burned because she had noticed immediately. Kennedy said, “That was so weird.” Kennedy had wide eyes and a blank expression. “No! There goes my perfect attendance. Wait, I’m on Fir Island Road But I was on Dike Road a minute ago.” Kennedy was so confused. She turned around and looked at the view. She was on Stackpole Hill. BUt the only way to get to Stackpole Hill was to cross the river. Kennedy thought about Cami and ran back to the bus stop. She was there in less than a minute. She went over to Cami and suddenly was back at the hill again. She was about to run back to Dike Road When all of a sudden she was there. What the heck? Cami widened her eyes and said, “I just reversed time.” Kennedy said, “I have super speed.” Tria emerged and said, “Cami, why are you thinking about cheeseburgers?” Cami was about to say she was thinking about cheeseburgers because she wanted a cheeseburger, but then she realized something. “Wait. Tria, did you just read my mind?” Tria paused and thought about that and replied, “I-I-I think I did. How did we get powers?” Amelia had been carrying Alex but had seen the whole thing. She said, “Kennedy was just running at the speed of light times 6.32273 to the third power. Oh and we got powers because there was lots of energy in our bodies and combined with the lightning that shot down from the sky we got pulled into a once in a lifetime electrical wave.” Kennedy nodded and then realized what Amelia had said. “Amelia! How did you know that?” Amelia shrugged and said, “I don’t know I just thought that-” Amelia started droning on and on about math and sciencey stuff that none of the other girls understood. Tria silently messaged everyone through her power and said,
“Her power is definitely super smarts.”
They all nodded at the same time. “-so that’s how I could tell that the equation would be the b factor times the e one which would make them equation b times e which I know would be the square root of pi also equal to 1.77245385091.” Amelia finished and looked brightly over to Alex who was staring intensely at Amelia. “You know your shoulder is a little bit out of place. When was the last time you got a massage? I mean, not to be rude or anything, but you could spare a bit of cash to fix that.” Camilla said, “X ray vision.” The girls nodded. Amelia squinted her eyes at Alex. Alex couldn’t handle Amelia’s death glare and turned away to examine Kennedy whose leg looked out of alignment. “I wish we could magically appear at the school. Now it’s official that I've missed 8 days of school this month and that’s not even counting my sick days.” Tesa complained. She sighed and kicked a rock. Suddenly a huge pink portal appeared out of nowhere. Tessa stepped into it almost instantly while the other girls shouted, “NO!” But it was too late. Tessa was floating in the pink portal and felt like jello. Then she saw a very bright light and she was at school. She was on the top of the principal’s office building. Where the principal was apparently ‘lounging’. He had a pink flamingo swimsuit on. There was a secret hot tub and Mr. Dubinge was about to go in. But that's when he noticed her. His eyes were the size of baseballs and he immediately shouted, “GRAVICKI!” Tessa basically considered her last name her actual name because that’s all she was called at school.
“I doubt he even knows my real name.”
Tessa thought silently to herself. Tessa wished she could get out of there and so the pink portal reappeared. Tessa jumped in without hesitation. Tessa fell onto the ground and Kennedy helped her up. “Where did you go?” Tessa explained about the principal and the roof but may have exaggerated a bit on some parts… “He was eating pizza!?” Alex asked in shock. Pizza had been banned at their school because it supposedly has lots of fat, sodium, and calories which can raise your risk of having a heart attack. “No. She’s lying. You know Mr. Dubinge would never eat pizza. Oh, and there were no other teachers. It was just him. But the rest of her story checks out.” Tria responded with annoyance in her voice. Tessa shrugged. (she had forgotten about Tria’s power) Kennedy said, “Ok so Tria’s power is obviously mind reading, mine is super speed, Amelia’s is super smarts, Alex’s is x-ray vision, Cami’s is time, and Tessa’s is teleportation and lying. Just kidding. She’s not a very good liar.” Tessa rolled her eyes while Alex laughed. “So are we going to school or not? Tessa could teleport us there but Mr. Dubinge would probably expel her for snooping and question her about randomly appearing on his roof from a pink circle.” Cami had some really good points so they voted and all except Amelia wanted to skip school. The girls also decided that they would act completely normal so that no one would know about their powers. Alex decided to go sleep in, Kennedy and Camilla went to Kennedy’s super chill aunt’s house who only lived a block away, Tessa was going to finish her book, and Amelia and Tria were going to the library to study for their test. Tria was going to do mental checks routinely to make sure that everyone was ok. Amelia and Tria grabbed their bikes and rode to the library. It was four blocks away but they didn’t care. Once they got there they chose a nice quiet spot in the corner. Amelia set down her books and whizzed through her homework. She already knew all of the answers so it was easy. Tria whizzed through hers too, but for a different reason. Let’s just say, as Tria said to herself,
“It’s too bad that Amelia has loud thoughts.”
Meanwhile Kennedy and Cami were jumping on a trampoline. They were playing Dead Man and Crack the Egg. The girls could only last about 2 seconds as the egg though because of the laughter. Alex dreamed about dragons and doctors. Tessa finished her book and did some origami. She had memorized about 25 different items but her favorite was the star box. It was a difficult one but it was very repetitive so she could remember it easily. (by easily I mean after 2 weeks she could do it without the instructions.) Tria was doing her hourly mental check when Alex sent her an urgent signal. Tria gave Amelia a tap and they quickly gathered their books and left. Tria sent Kennedy and Cami warnings and they ran to the playground. Tessa was sent a warning signal too but was already on the playground so she stayed put. Alex came out and was pestered with questions. “What’s wrong?” “Did you tell?” “What’s so important?” Alex whistled the 38 year old whistle that had been passed down in her family for generations. “You guys! I am fine! I just had an idea.” Tria pursed her lips and said, “Then why’d you use the distress signal?”
“I used it because I didn’t know how else to notify you. I want us to do something. We got these super awesome powers and now we aren’t allowed to tell anyone or use them. It’s not fun. We should have a mission.” The other girls understood how it may be hard for a nine year old to understand the secrecy and importance of the powers they had been given. “Like a spy mission?” Tria asked. Alex nodded and said, “Any ideas?” Cami had one but was hesitant to share it. Tria said, “Go on Cami. It’s a good one.” Cami glanced around and said, “How about we spy on Ms. Rovalay? She just moved into town and has her own tech company. It could be fun.” One by one after a few thoughts and considerations they had a plan. The girls ran over to Ms. Rovalay’s house and then began going bush to bush sneakily. Kennedy, Alex, and Cami went up to Ms. Rovolay’s door and knocked three times. Suddenly a gray gas was released and they fainted. Tria and Amelia stood in shock. Tria read Amelia’s mind and she was thinking the same things as her.
“Oh no! This was supposed to be a funny spy activity. Now it’s a rescue mission……”
Tria and Amelia felt a hand on each of their shoulders and turned around. A man with black clothing and a mask said, “You’re coming with me.” Tria and Amelia looked at each other in fright. Handkerchiefs were clutched over their noses and the girls blacked out. A few hours later Cami woke up and tried to say, “What the heck!?” But she had a gag and so it sounded like this. “Whaduhdeck?” Tria read Cami’s mind and sent a virtual response to Cami.
‘‘That’s exactly how I feel.’’
Tria decided to start a virtual group chat to all of them. A ping! In all of the girls' heads woke them up if they weren’t already.
Kennedy- This is all your fault Alex!
Alex- No it’s not! It may have been my idea at the start but you guys agreed to it.
Tessa- It’s Cami’s fault for giving us the idea to spy on Ms. Rovolay.
Cami- So untrue! I didn’t want to share my idea and wouldn't have if Tria would have stayed quiet!
Tria- That’s a lie!
Amelia- Stop! Alex is right. It only took us 3.29 seconds to say yes to her idea. We all wanted to do the spy mission. We made a plan that got us into this mess, so let’s make one to get us out.
Tessa fell asleep just as Ms. Rovolay entered. The man who had knocked out Tria and Amelia stood beside her. Tria ended the group chat. “We know about your plans, Tarantulas.” Ms. Rovolay said coldly. Tarantulas? The man yanked each of the girl’s tape off. Cami started off, “I'm so sorry Ms. Rovolay. We were just having fun. I know it’s not right to spy on people but, we’re kids.” Ms. Rovolay said, “LIES! You may be kids but you are evil! You’re Tarantulas!” Why does she keep calling us tarantulas? Tria didn’t have to ask though to figure out the answer. She read Ms. Rovolay’s mind and finally it all made sense. “Tarantula is an evil group of villains, right? Is that why you’re afraid of us? You think we’re a part of Tarantula?” Tria said this all in a soothing tone, even though she felt as scared as ever. “Wha- ROT!” The man who was now apparently Rot said, “Yes ma'am?” Ms. Rovolay whispered something to ROt and he said, “Yes ma'am.” Ms. Rovolay quickly left while Rot stayed behind. All Rot said was, “No talk or you walk.” The girls soon understood what he meant. Rot had flipped a switch that turned on the fire floor. One step and they would be toast. Ms. Rovolay was back shortly so Rot turned off the floor. “Ok girl-”
“Sheesh woman, you have a very dislocated spine.”
Kennedy started running around the room super fast and Cami kept fast forwarding time.
“Yeah and you’re taller than average. 6 feet 2 inches. Wow. meaning your dad must have had a height of about… 6’ 9! Jeez, that’s tall.” Ms. Rovolay blinked in amazement and tripped. She hit the rug and the girls shouted, “ROTCARTXE!” (that was Rot’s real name and he preferred to be called by it.) Rotcartxe and Tria had been secretly communicating and she had convinced him to help them. Rotcartxe quickly untied them and said, “You better hurry!” Tessa was shaken awake and the girls ran outside. They started cheering but had forgotten about the knockout gas. Ugh. Amelia and Tria quickly exchanged confident glances before they were knocked out. The girls were awakened by a loud horn. “What’s that for?” Tessa shouted angrily. She could be quite the grump. Ms. Rovolay emerged and the girls sighed. Kennedy who had been wondering this for a while said, “Quick question. You know how gas automatically comes out when someones at your door? Yeah, well how do you not pass out from it?” Ms. Rovolay replied, “I have a back door. Luckily you girls didn’t know about it.” Kennedy couldn’t believe she hadn’t thought of this. Even if she wasn’t the smart one. I mean Ms. Rovolay had to leave her house someway. A guard opened the door and whispered to Ms. Rovolay. Ms. Rovolay pointed at each of them saying, “Speed, Time, Minds, Smarts, and the other two are useless.” The girls were each given weird looking hats except for Tessa and Alex. Tria read the guard’s mind and realized their fate. They were going to be brain washed! Tria mentally messaged everyone and the girls gulped. Tessa wished she could get out of there so a pink portal appeared. Tessa kind of fell into it and tried to pull Alex with, but Amelia held her back. Tessa was confused. She was trying to help keep Alex safe. Tria sent her a mental message.
“Don’t mess up the plan!”
Tessa wasn’t trying to mess up the plan she was trying to help! She hated that she wasn’t part of the plan. Tessa decided that she was going to make herself part of the plan. Tessa wished to go t0 a different place.
“I am going to help save them!”
Alex meanwhile was in Amelia’s arms. Amelia was talking to her about how they were going to be A.O.K. “You promise?” Amelia looked at Tria and said, “Pinkie.” The sisters pinkie promised and Alex was taken away. She was set down a few feet away from the house with the doors locked and the instant gas turned on. Alex sat down in the grass. Her best friends and sister were trapped in a room that was locked about to get their minds wiped. How could Amelia be ok? She couldn’t. Alex decided to start making a plan.
The words walls Kept repeating in Alex’s head in Tria’s voice. If Tria was going to send her a message wouldn’t she send one that was useful? But that’s when Alex realized she had. Alex walked over to the wall over by the house. She turned on her x-ray vision and searched. She saw a room of pots and pans (the kitchen), a room with a sink and bathtub (bathroom), and a room with 4 girls tied up. That had to be the one. She touched the wall and her hand went in. Perfect. Alex stepped back a few steps and took a deep breath. She ran as fast as she could at the wall. When she was centimeters away she put her hands out infront of her and walked through the wall. At Alex’s sudden appearance Kennedy and Cami stared in shock while Tria and Amelia said, “We knew you could do it!” Alex runs over to untie Kennedy and Kennedy unties everyone else in only 4.384 seconds. But then the guards came back and shouted, “Stop them!” But Alex was one step ahead. She grabbed Amelia, who grabbed Tria, who grabbed Cami, who grabbed Kennedy. They went through the wall and cheered! They were safe! All of a sudden Tessa and ten police cars pulled up to the house. “Hands up. Put your hands up. You have the right to remain silent.” Tessa hopped out and said, “Your welcome right as the girl’s captors were being handcuffed and put into police cars. They all hugged and congratulated each other. “So I was thinking we need a name. I mean what are they going to call us when we save the world and are being interviewed on TV?” Cami said. She had a point. “How about A.T.T.A.C.K? Amelia, Tria, Tessa, Alex, Cami, and Kennedy.” They all agreed on A.T.T.A.C.K as their name. All of a sudden a lady in a blue outfit appeared. The girls peppered her with questions. “Who are you?:” “Are you part of TARANTULA?” “Who do you work for?” What do you want?” “Where’d you get that jacket?” The lady replied calmly, “My name is Agent Sapphire. My agency NOV8 (innovate) was very impressed with how you handled your situation. I’ll be in touch.” With that she handed Kennedy a business card and left. The girls squealed excitedly and looked at the card.
2 years later
Kennedy, Cami, Amelia, Tria, Tessa, and Alex are sitting together at a table talking. “OK. You got the plan down Kenn?” asks Tria. Kennedy nods and they all say, “Ok then let’s go A.T.T.A.C.K!”
