The Man in the Tall Top Hat
Born 1976, M, from Whitechapel, AustraliaYou’re restless tonight,
All alone in your bed,
Hear the man in the tall top hat
The Earth heaves and swells,
With the graveyards he’s fed,
Praise the man in the tall top hat
You peer through your window,
As your fate hits the stage,
See the man in the tall top hat
You reach for your blade,
All bravado and rage,
For the man in the tall top hat
You reach him and lunge,
Lose your footing and fall,
‘neath the man in the tall top hat
He clutches your throat,
With fingers ending in claws,
Fear the man in the tall top hat
Your face meets his own,
See his teeth slick with gore,
Damn the man in the tall top hat
Your light groweth dim,
Your pulse slows to nil,
Feed the man in the tall top hat
Your only hope in the world,
Make the monster fall ill,
Afflict the man in the tall top hat
Ghouls may expire,
In the fires of will,
But not the man in the tall top hat
And he’ll continue to feed and that’s that.

02/12/2022Talking to Jason are used to like top hats. I thought they made people look classy and elegant. Now I'm scared of them. As Martha would say: "your work hair is done."
I read the other deep comments on the thread but I think I'm too shallow to agree with that. Lol I was just scared. Great job. Smiles Kevin

02/12/2022Thank you very much, Kevin. I'd love to figure out why I find top hats so disturbing. At any rate, now I'm honored to initiate you into my headwear-phobic club. Lol. : )

01/29/2022What a frightening conception Jason! Maybe that man exists inside the evil that settles in everyone and must be fought and dereated to save the good that should preveil. The man with his killing instincts such as greed and domination spreads horror and insecurity.

01/31/2022Thank you, Aziz. I completely concur that this kind of evil is analogous to that which afflicts all mankind in some way. It's that hunger enabled by shadowed ambition that spurs on its spread. : )

01/27/2022Oh so creepy, It's like the ultimate night terror.
Multiple times I have heard people talk about someone in a tall hat and wonder if there is something sinister about that creepy dude.
I can see your poem as a movie scene.
Fabulous piece :-)

01/31/2022Thank you so much, Gail. Yes, I've always found top hats kinda creepy (even when I was a kid). What's under there? Is the wearer's head misshapen? Is it because it adds a sort of disproportionate height? I may need to ask a therapist. Lol. : )
