Hide and Seek
Born 2008, F, from Southborough/MA, United StatesHide And Seek
By: Adeleine Beaumont
Where I live, there are two different types of people; Hiders and Seekers. For some reason, the Seekers have assumed that the Hiders are bad people. Unfortunately, I was born a Hider. People say there aren’t any more Hiders. Well, they were wrong. I’m still here, aren’t I? Weirdly enough, all Hiders have brown hair, and all Seekers have blonde hair. Don’t ask me why that is, I have no explanation. This is what happened to me 3 months ago.
I was sitting at my kitchen table with my two younger brothers, Ethan and Conner, and we were finishing up our homework. Our mother homeschools us since we can’t go to public school.
“Are you done yet?” my mom said to us.
“Almost!” I said back to her.
“Just hurry, dinner’s almost ready!” I sighed and finished my last math problem, and hurried up the stairs to my room. I put my homework on my desk, and went back downstairs, where dinner was waiting for me on the table.
“Ugh, plain old rice again?!” I complained. My brothers were sitting across from me, eating their rice with annoyed faces.
“Oh, Beth,” my mom said, “It’s all we have until I have a chance to go shopping..”
“Fine..” I told her. I sat down and started to eat.
“So, what would you like for your 15th birthday coming up?” my mom asked me.
“Mom, you know we don’t have enough money to buy me anything. I don’t need anything anyway.” I told her. She just sighed and continued to eat. After I finished my “dinner”, I went upstairs to my room and changed into my pajamas, and got into bed. I looked out my window as it started to snow heavily. We’ll be eating rice for the next year, if we don’t get any more money, I thought to myself. I sighed and rolled over, falling asleep.
I woke up earlier than expected the next morning. I could hear my brothers snoring in their bedrooms. I changed my clothes, put on a coat, and my beanie, making sure to cover up my hair, and tiptoed out the front door. “Finally!” I said, “Fresh air.” I took a deep breath, and started walking down the street. It was so nice to be outside for once. As I walked further into town, I saw an old Cafe on the corner of St. Louis street. “HELP NEEDED!” was written on a big sign, in big red letters, hanging on the door. I thought to myself for a minute. Of course I don't want people to find out I’m a Hider, but what other choice do I have? I don’t wanna be eating bland food for the rest of my boring old life. I crossed the street and went inside the Cafe.
“H-Hello?” I said nervously. An old woman popped her head out from behind the counter. She looked very excited to see someone walk into her Cafe.
“Hello, young lady. I’m Georgia! What can I get for you today?” she asked me.
“Oh, I don’t want anything,” I said. “I saw the help needed sign out front, and was wondering if I could be of assistance?” Her face lit up.
“Yes, yes, come to the back!” She said. She guided me towards the back of the Cafe where there were four other people with aprons on, talking to each other and laughing.
“Everyone,” said Georgia. “This is...” she looked at me.
“Beth,” I said. “Beth Williams.”
“Nice to meet you, I’m Carson,” said a boy with blond hair and bright blue eyes. He then pointed to the three others standing by him. “That’s Amanda, my sister,” Amanda had a gray hat on with a long, blond ponytail. “Over there is Nick,” He was playing on a game boy, and didn’t even look up at me. “And last but not least, Tyler.” Tyler was standing behind everyone. He had a red beanie on, and his apron was covering his badge sweatshirt. Although his beanie was covering his hair, I didn’t mind. After all, it’s almost below freezing outside, you gotta stay warm somehow. Georgia told me to take off my coat and hang it up by the back door. She then gave me a brown apron that had the name of her Cafe on the front.
“So,” she said. “What do you know how to do?”
“Well, I’ve never actually had a real job before..” I told her.
“Oh, that’s alright, I’ll just have you sweep the floor and clean tables, alright?” I nodded, as she gave me a broom, a wash cloth, and a bucket of lukewarm water. She then walked back into the kitchen, and left me to clean.
I wasn’t surprised how dusty everything was. I'm not even exaggerating when I say I swept up multiple dust piles from just half the room. It had been an hour and a half before I finished cleaning the Cafe. We had a few customers come in. Nothing too special. A few hours later, I was heading to the back to get my coat so I could head home, when Tyler came up to me.
“Hey, Beth, right?” he asked me. “I was wondering if you wanted to maybe get to know each other better, and come into work a little early tomorrow?”
“Oh,” I said. I was kind of surprised since no one has asked me to hang out in so long. “Yeah, sounds good.” I smiled and left, starting to walk home. I had a good feeling about working at the Cafe.
When I got home, I opened the front door, and took my coat off as well as my hat. My mom rushed up to me, with a worried look on her face.
“Where were you?!” she yelled. “I was so worried! I had no idea where you had gone.”
“Relax,” I told her. “I just went for a walk.” I walked up to my room. I couldn’t let her know I had a job. She’d freak out.
The next day, I got up earlier than before, and headed down to the Cafe. I walked inside and Tyler was standing behind the counter, cleaning out a shelf.
“Hey, Tyler.” I said as I took my coat off.
“Oh, you’re here.” he said.
Me and Tyler just talked for the longest time. I learned that he’s 15, and likes to play hockey. He’s an only child, and moved here from Illinois. I loved talking to him, but maybe it was because I haven’t had a friend in so long.
It had been 2 months since I started working at the Cafe. I had gotten to know all the other people who worked there, and I got paid a decent amount. Until one day, I messed up. Bad. I came into work, my beanie snug on my head. Georgia had asked me and Tyler to wipe off the tables, so we did. But, as I was heading behind the counter, I dropped the wash cloth I was using, on the floor. As I went to pick it up, my beanie had gotten stuck on a hook that was nailed to the wall. My beanie came right off my head, and you could see the ponytail that was holding up my hair. Everyone stared at me. Georgia turned purple she was so mad.
“Amanda, go! Call the police!” Georgia yelled. Amanda ran to the phone and started to dial the number.
“Wait! I’m not going to do anything!” I yelled. Before I could finish my sentence, Tyler grabbed my arm and ran with me out of the Cafe.
“What are you doing?!” I asked him.
“I’m trying to help you!” he said. I could hear police sirens in the distance. They were coming closer to us, down the street as we ran. I got to my house and pulled Tyler in with me. My mom was holding my brother's hands as the police stomped into our house. 'We don’t have time.' I thought to myself. The police grabbed my mom as well as my brothers. Still holding Tyler’s hand, I ran out the back door, not looking back.
The wind blew off the baseball hat that Tyler was wearing, and surprisingly, he had dark brown hair that paired well with his green eyes.
“Come on! Hurry!” Tyler yelled. I looked at him, not believing what I saw. We kept running, and we weren’t gonna stop. At this moment, I knew we were being hunted.

07/23/2021A great story. Too bad it reflects reality. If you don't have the right color skin or faith you might be judged. Or you don't get the good education or Job.
Good story.

07/08/2021That was an outstanding piece of work, Adeleine. Your story was well written, intriguing, exciting, mysterious, dramatic, and scary.
It was so well done that I am having a really hard time believing that someone your age could write it. Very impressive. I think this storyline could be developed into a novel, with a lot more story and character development, but I'm glad it began as a short story, because I don't have the time or patience to read a novel. But you have the talent to become a great writer. Thanks for sharing your stories on Storystar! : )
