BROTHER and SISTER
Born 1946, M, from Harrington NSW, AustraliaAn old man sat on his lounge chair and he started to sing a little song
"I'm H A P P Y. I'm H A P P Y. I know I am" he looked down at his dog, did you
know that I use to sing this when I was a little boy in Ireland. He laid his
head back and closed his eyes.
His sister Yvonne was sitting at the fire,
he was ten and she was almost nine "mum when will dad be home as it is
almost time, we want to go to the pictures." Their mum and dad always said
going to the pictures but knew the older kids said movies. Just then
their dad walked in, they ran up to him holding out their hand "can we
have some money we want to go to the pictures." They were hoping to get
sixpence each as it was four pence to get in and then they would have
tuppence left to buy some sweets but all he give them was four pence
each. It was better than nothing and if they stayed at home they they had
no TV most of the children in the street they also did not have a TV.
They would say their dad is waiting for them to be cheaper ,they would
not say that our dad could not afford to buy one.
We put on our shoes and dad said "put your coats on as it is starting to
snow." We got dressed quickly and ran outside to see the snow we said good
bye" and started walking across the Blitz Ground it was were over forty
houses had been bombed in the war and now it was a large flat area,
nothing of the houses remained just some broken bricks and rusty cans. It
was a short cut to the main road, when we got there we could see all
the children queuing up outside the Picture theatre. When they got in
line he said to his sister" I hope it is in color" then the line began to
move, they bought their tickets and raced inside to get a good seat in
the middle. They all waited for the lights to go out then they all
started to clap. It wasn't in color it was a black and white western
staring Roy Rogers and his horse Trigger. He looked up at the bright
light cumming from the projector when he seen it flying through the air,
he knew what it was, the older boys would buy damaged apples and in the
dark they would scoop out the damaged part with their fingers and then
throw it hoping it would land on someones head. The usher would run
shinning his torch yelling "if I catch you you will never be allowed back
in". When he shone his torch on someone they would sit their looking
straight ahead at The Blue Cards
When it was over every one raced to get out he walked out with his
sister and it was so bright after sitting in the dark for two hours. It had
been snowing heavy and when he looked up and down the road every thing
was so white, he looked across at the roofs of the old houses they were
pure white and the smoke from the chimneys went straight up and would
vanish in the snow. He grabbed his sisters hand and ran across the road, he
looked at the old gray footpath and now it was white, they ran along it
before anyone had a chance to walk on it, when they got to the Blitz
Ground he stopped. It was now a sheet of snow no broken bricks and old
rusty cans it looked so clean he wished it could stay like this for ever,
they started running back and forwards they wanted to be the first to
leave their footprints. When they got Home their dad had a nice big
fire going and their mum told them to get their wet shoes and socks off
and dry them in front of the fire. They sat their warming their hands
then they pulled off their shoes and shocks, their dad hung up their coats
in front of the fire as they were also wet. They were siting there nice
and warm and their mum brought them a cup of tea and a piece of toast,
his sister complained that her toast was burnt black her mum said "just
eat it you know it will make your teeth white." He was siting there
drinking his tea when he looked up and pinned on the wall were two blue
cards he jumped up "tonight is the Christmas party at the Salvation Army
we have to go tonight because we have blue tickets. His mum said "your
shoes and socks are still wet". He pushed their shoes closer to the fire and
watched small amounts of steam rise, his sister kept shaking their socks
and coats until they were dry. Then there was a knock at the door,he
opened it, his two best friends and the the girl next door asked "are you
ready" he told them in a minute. They started to get dressed they were
putting on their coats when their mum asked "are you shoes dry?" they told her
yes then she held out two pair of socks "put these on they will keep your
hands warm" often you would see children with socks on as they looked
like a par of mittens as gloves were to dear to buy. They left with their
friends and as they were walking some of the boys would run and try to
slide the girls would be holding hands as they were afraid of falling
over. When they got to the Salvation Army Hall they could see that there
was a lot of children waiting to go in.
They were glad to get inside as it was so cold outside there was
rows and rows of tables and chairs and every one raced to get a seat.
They started telling them things they should not do, like smoking swearing,
and drinking and to come to Sunday school every Sunday. Then they pulled
down a big white screen and started showing colored pictures like Daniel
in the lions den, his sister did not like it as she was frighten of the
lions, Mosses on the mountain and Jhoana and the whale. Everyone was
happy when they had finished because they knew what was next. The two
doors opened and the men and woman in their uniforms came out with large
tea pots, every one was given a mug they filled them with hot tea and a
woman would put a spoon full of sugar in it, some boys would ask for two
or three but they only gave you one, then they would come and put the milk
in. Everyone would hold their mugs in their hands to keep them warm.
Then came the buns, some were so big, some with currents and raisins in
them, but the best ones were the cream buns. He did not get a cream
bun, but his sister did it did not take him long to make her swap. He
loved cream buns, when they had finished some boys were asking for more
but that was all you got. They quickly picked up the mugs and cleaned the
tables. Then he came out, he was the smallest Salvation Army Officer they
had ever seen, but they knew he had the loudest they ever heard. He stood
up on the platform and called out "are you ready to sing and everyone
yelled back "YES" then he started to sing" I'm H A P P Y. "
"I'm H A P P Y. I know I am I'm sure I am I'm H A P P Y."
"I'm S A V E D. I'm S A V E D. I know I am I'm sure I am.I'm SAVED.
"I'm L O V E D. I'm L O V E D. I know I am I'm sure I am I'm L O V E D."
Then he would raise his hands and call for us all to sing and we would
sing out "I'm H A P P Y. S A V E D. and L O V E D. I know I am I'm sure I am
H A P P Y.S A V E D.and L O V E D."
Then it was all over and as you lined up to walk out the door they
handed you a piece of fruit and a small bar of chocolate. On the way
home the girls would be singing H A P P Y. S A V E D and L O V E D.
Then he opened his eyes and looked at his little dog who was asleep on his lap
and went back to sleep.
