Mistress J: The Mean Teacher
Born 1996, F, from Mandeville, JamaicaIn the small town of Edna Village, there lives a teacher by the name of Mistress J.
She is tall, brown and wears glasses. She is the head teacher at the Scarlett
Missionary School, the only one of its kind in the whole village. Mistress J teaches
grades four and six. In the village of Edna, you have lots of families, worker men
and even women and of course children.
The Scarlett Missionary School is very colorful, the wall of the school is painted in
bright purple with rhymes, and cartoon characters and numbers, the school ground
is filled with numerous playground equipment such as a monkey bar painted in all
sorts color , a purple seesaw as long as a river, a big brown slide wide enough to fit
ten persons, a red tire swing, and a merry-go-round as big as a ship and the ground
itself is covered in sand for protection. Inside the classrooms the walls are painted
in yellow and orange with charts, and different displays, and the chairs and desk
are painted in white with hearts and smiley faces drawn on them.
Its three days before school reopens, the children in the village are off from school
on summer but they are extremely happy to go back as they are intrigued to learn
every day. Four friends, Timmi, Keez, Tee Tee, and Ram Ram are the happiest as
they will be going into a new grade. Every day they meet by the big tree at the
Green Park down the road from the school to discuss and share their excitement.
It is the first day of school, the school yard is full with children excited to start the
day and kick start the new term. Some children tagged along with their parents,
others by themselves, the principal and other teachers can be seen walking around
and greeting both the children and the parents.
Tee Tee, Timmi, Keez and Ram Ram all arrive together by themselves, neatly
attired in their school uniform. The uniform for all grade level is the same, blue
pleated tunic and white blouse for the girls with the school tie which is also blue
with black shoes and white socks, and for the boys its blue pants and white shirt
also with the school tie with black shoes and white socks as well.
The girls hair are neatly combed and the boys hair neatly brushed. As they enter
the school, they sang their favorite song.
“We are here to learn, and learning is fun.
I am a learner, you are a learner, c’mon let’s learn.”
They hurriedly skipped to class still singing with glorious smiles on their faces.
Expecting to be greeted by other students, they enter their class but to their
surprise, they were the first to arrive and so they decide to pick out where they will
sit for the rest of the term. With careful ‘seatilation’, as they like to call it, they
choose the four front seats and there they will remain.
It is now nine o’ clock and time for their first class for the morning.
Mistress J enters and stands at the front of the class with a smile on her face that
stretches for about two miles,
‘Welcome students, my name is Mistress J and I will be your teacher for the rest of
the term. I am also the head teacher for my department. I am looking forward to a
term of discipline and fun, and of course learning. Let us start the morning off my
introducing ourselves, shall we? State your name, your age, and something you
love to do. Let us begin at the front, starting with the girl with the afro”
The girl stands to the side with a graceful smile on her face and starts to introduce
herself.
“Good morning, my name is Timmi, I am twelve years old and I love to write”, she
sits back down.
Tee Tee follows,
“Good morning, my name is Tee Tee, I am eleven years old, and I love to dance”,
she sits back down.
Keez follows,
“Good morning, my name is Keez, I am twelve years old and I love to dance too”,
she sits back down.
Now it is Ram Ram’s turn,
“Good morning, my name is Ram Ram, I am twelve years old and I love to
perform”, he sits back down.
The introduction continued until each student introduced themselves and all were
seated.
Mistress J,
“Wonderful, now let’s begin class”.
It is the end of the day and parents have come to collect their children to go home.
You can hear chatter all around from different students discussing how their day
went and how much they enjoyed their classes. Timmi, Tee Tee, Keez and Ram
Ram meets by the gate to do the same.
Timmi excitedly begins the conversation,
“Classes were awesome today and that teacher Mistress J, she seems nice, not to
mention the other students and how welcoming they were”
“Yes, I agree Timmi, I’m so excited and ready to learn”, said Tee Tee
The others nod their head in agreement and they all skip home together still
discussing their day.
It is the fourth day of school and things have been for the four friends, they have
made new friends, and they understand the lessons they are being taught and the
teachers are all nice and helpful or so they thought.
Timmi, Keez, Ram Ram and Tee Tee are seated in class ready for their lesson with
Mistress J. They wait patiently and excitedly while talking.
Mistress J enters and aggressively address the students,
“Good morning students, take out your books and stop the talking we have a lot to
do”
Shocked and amazed the students stare at her with their mouths wide open
wondering what they did wrong or who has troubled Mistress J.
“Am I a ghost? Hurry up and do as I say! Lazy children” said Mistress J.
Still in shock they take out their books and pencils.
It is lunch time and children are all over the school having their lunches, some are
seated in their classrooms, and even some on the playground equipment. The ones
not eating are waiting in the lunch line that is as long as from England to Jamaica.
The security is also walking around checking to see if there is any problem, and to
prevent any from happening.
The Four Musketeers as they are called by fellow class and schoolmates are also in
the lunch line waiting to buy their favorite, coco bread and cheese with June Plum
juice. While in the line they discuss with happened in class and how shocked they
were that Mistress J behaved like that and for what reason. They came to the
conclusion that maybe she is just having a bad day.
Lunch time is over and students are back in class. The Four Musketeers are back in
class as well for their last class of the day with Mistress J. They have forgotten
about what had happened earlier on and hope Mistress J is feeling much better.
Mistress J steps in and Ram Ram jumps up to greet her,
“Good afternoon Mistress J, are we going to sing the lesson today?’
Keez joins Ram Ram in sharing the excitement,
“I really hope so, I’m a great singer”, she says
Timmi and Tee Tee still seated looks at them with smiles.
“Sit down!” shouts Mistress J
“What nonsense is this? Children singing instead of learning and writing in books,
I beg your pardon, we will do no such thing, take out your books we don’t have
time to waste you stupid children”
Ashamed they do as they are told with hesitation. For the rest of the time they were
silent, except for Mistress J who kept on shouting at them and calling them stupid.
The class is only for an hour and there is ten minutes left before the bell rings, and
so to end the class Mistress J gives them homework to bring in the next day.
The bell rings and quickly without hesitation they grabbed their bags and left
without saying goodbye to Mistress J.
They ran home separately to tell their parents about the day they had and how
Mistress J has suddenly changed.
That same evening they all met by their usual spot to discuss what has been
happening to Mistress J.
“I think we need to come up with a plan”, says Ram Ram
“A plan? I don’t think so, we might get into trouble” says Tee Tee
“I think a plan is a good idea, lets think of one, one that won’t get us in trouble but
one that will just teach Mistress J a lesson that will make her change” says Keez
Timmi squeezing her eyes together with her mouth tightly closed and as if a
lightbulb appeared over her head, she jumps out saying,
“BINGO, I got it! Let’s do to her what she’s doing to us”
“That’s a great idea, and I know just how to, just follow my lead whenever we are
in class” says Ram Ram
It is Friday and it is the last day of school for the week. The Four Musketeers are at
school and present in class ready to carry out the plan. Mistress J who is always
early steps in the class, she looks around she as if she was being watched and
shouted,
“Alright you lazy turtles, take out your books and write down these words to
practice”
Nobody moves, not even a flinch, they all just sat and stared at her
“I said take out your books and write down these words children”, she shouted
again
Ram Ram mocks her in a squeaky tone,
“Take out your books and write down these words children”
They all laugh and like an angry dragon Mistress J takes a ruler from out of her bag
and slams in on her desk.
The Four Musketeers still bound on carrying out their plan they start to sing a song
to the tune of ‘What Can You Do Punchinella Little Fella’
“Be nice to people, they will be nice to you
Treat them nice, they will treat you nice too”
They repeated the song twice. The class time ran out and they left singing the song
leaving Mistress J slumped and ashamed in her chair. They went home happy that
evening knowing that their plan worked and that all they have to do now is wait
until next week for another week of school to see if she has changed her ways.
It is Monday afternoon make their way to class and to there surprise they meet
Mistress J already in the classroom waiting. Normally it is the other way around.
Mistress J greeted them softly and with a big smile brighter than the sun itself.
The Four Musketeers smiled back but were very cautious so as to not say anything
as they were not sure if it was really Mistress J greeting them.
“You four students taught me a very good lesson on Friday. And while I was
ashamed, it made me reflect on what the song was saying and you guys are right,
please forgive me, and I am sorry for the bad treatment” said Mistress J very
calmly.
The Four Musketeers surprised but happy looked at each other and let out a big
laughter and together said,
“Yes, we forgive you!”
They all laughed and started to sing the song again,
“Be nice to people, they will be nice to you
Treat them nice, they will treat you nice too”
They sang so loudly that other children and teachers could hear them and joined
them, even the principal.
From that day on, Mistress J was never mean to anybody ever again.
