The Rooster
Born 1946, M, from Harrington NSW, AustraliaThe farm had been there for over a hundred years Johns Great Grandfather
had settled and build up the farm. Now John and his wife lived there. It
wasn't a big farm, they had some pigs, a few goats, a horse, two cows,
some ducks, sheep and two sheep dogs. At the end of the farm was the
chicken coop there was about fifteen hens and one rooster. He was a
mighty proud rooster he would walk around with his head held high
sticking his chest out and he loved the colors in his long tail feathers.
Every morning as the sun was coming up he would jump on top of the hen
house and let a mighty COCK a DOODLE DO it was so loud it would travel
all the was down the valley to the neighboring farms. He had seen the
farmer and the two dogs and some of the sheep but he often wondered who
else lived on the farm. One day the farmers wife came to get the eggs he
walked around his his chest sticking out and his tail held high but she
didn't notice him, she got the eggs and left and when he looked at the
gate she had forgotten to close it all the way. He walked over and put his
head through the gap and all the hens ran over and called out "don't go
out you have to stay here." He looked around and stepped outside he looked
back at the hens and said "I am going to see who else lives on this farm"
and off he went. As he was walking he came to a small wall and he heard a
noise he jumped up onto the wall and when he looked down there were two
large pigs laying in the mud one of the pigs looked at him and said "What
do you want?" "Oh I'm just looking" he said the other pig looked up and said
"look somewhere else you don't belong here this place is for pigs go back
to were you came from." He jumped down and thought they are not very
nice pigs then he spotted some goats in a field and as he was walking
over to them one of the goats came running over to him "What do you want?"
and before he could speak it told him "get out of our field the
other goats came over and called out " get out of our field you look
different than us go back to were you came from. He was upset for what
they said so he just kept walking when he heard quack quack he looked
over and there were some ducks and two geese down at the pond he
thought they called out to him so he wondered over but as he got closer
one of the geese came running up to him and called out "stop you can't
come in here this pond is for ducks and geese only and you don't look
like any of us so why don't you just turn around and go back to were
you came from ."
He was starting to hurt inside, why are they treating me like this I
live on the farm like them he lifted his head up and looked at a large
barn I may as well look in there as I have come this far when he walked
into the barn he saw a horse and two cows "what do you want?" called out the
horse he looked at the horse and said "well I live on this farm and and I
was just looking around." one of the cows said "don't let him look around
he's a rooster and the next thing you know the barn will be full of hens
tell him to get out of here he dosn't belong here." He turned around and
walked outside then the two sheep dogs came running over to him he
looked at them and said "I know what you are going to say get out of here
you don't belong here" and before he could say a another word one of the dogs
stopped him "no we came here to take you back to the chicken coop because
the farmer said there was a fox in the area so lets go you will be a lot
safer there." When he was inside he asked the dogs "why was everyone so
mean to me?" one of the dogs said "well they are only animals and they don't
know any better? "What about the farmer and his wife do they behave like
that?" the two dogs looked at each other and one of them said "well they
are humans and humans are a lot smarter than animals so I don't think
they would behave like that and the other dog said "or would they "
