The Wishing Stick
Born 2004, F, from Cambridge, United KingdomHave you ever wished for something? Most of us have. Whether your wish was really really big, or super super small, we’ve always wanted for them to come true. Sometimes, our wishes could simply be to make a friend or two.
This is where we begin our story. In a small town, in Missouri, at a very tiny elementary school. The sun was beating down, making the temperature hotter than usual. This type of weather is when the children of this school loved to travel outside, and play. All the children were familiar with one another, that is until he came along.
Who is “he” you might be asking. Well that’s little August Finley. August, just moved from Florida, and was very disappointed, out of all places to move his parents wanted to move here. He remembered, when his parents told him they were moving to the middle-of-nowhere Missouri. “Why not Hawaii, or New York?” he questioned. They just shook their heads at him.
A few days later, August still hadn’t made any friends. He would walk outside alone, watching all the other children play, feeling lonely. He trudged along, until he fell over a pocket-sized stick. “Oh!” he yelped. Then he picked up the stick and played with it in his hands. He then hit straight in the head with an idea, that would definitely help him make friends!
August strutted out into the middle of the playground. “Oh, I hope no one finds out about my wishing stick..!” he shouted obviously loud. He sat down in a pile of mulch, and pretended to whisper something to the stick. The kids at recess soon gathered around out of curiosity. “What’s a wishing stick?” one girl asked.
“Ahh my magical wishing stick, do you want to hear the tale?” August said. Everyone’s heads turned directly towards him, attentive, and listening. August told, that he found his wishing stick, washed up on a beach in Florida. “How’d you know it was a wishing stick?” a kid shouted. “I made a wish, of course, and then it came true.” August answered. His adoring youthful crowd gasped. “I threw it back into the ocean, and it came right back to me, and from then on, I knew it was meant to be.” He added.
After his story, everyone wanted to make a wish with the wishing stick. Hands reached out, and he backed up overwhelmed by the amount of attention he was receiving. August knew he could never let his classmates know that his stick was nothing more than a regular stick, let alone a magic one! He ran off into the distance out of fear.
He clutched his stick in his hand, and thought “here goes nothing.” He whispered to himself “I wish everyone was gone!” He opened his eyes, and the playground was empty. He gasped, the magic stick had worked. “Hello!” He shouted. No one responded. He sat down and started to cry. He knew that lying was no way to get friends, and he felt terrible. Then he wished all of his classmates away!
August looked down at the stick, pleading for it to grant him one more wish. It worked once before, if only it could work again. He then opened his eyes when he felt someone shaking him. “Uh, what happened?” August asked. A girl looked at him and said “You fell asleep! With a stick? I’m Charlotte by the way.” she said smiling. “Oh and this is Dax.” she said pointing to a boy behind her. He waved and looked away shyly.
August was in awe! It had all been a dream. But, his wish had come true, he had made two new friends already. How stupid was he to think that a plain-old stick could grant wishes. Lying was never the way to meet new people! He threw the stick and walked off with his new friends, content and happy. Without any magic.
