The girl that stuttered.
Born 1946, M, from Harrington NSW, AustraliaTheir once was a little girl named Isabella
Isabella was only eight but she had a problem when she got upset she
would stutter and when this happened at school the cool girls would make
fun of her,and she did not like going to school.
One morning when she got up she asked her mother could she stay at home
because the teacher will be asking a lot of questions for the test today.
Her mother said no you have to go to school,so off she went to school
worried if the teacher asked he a question and if she did not know the
answer would she start to stutter and the the cool girls would make fun of
her. On the afternoon of the test the teacher was asking a lot of
questions and would pick someone to answer it. Isabella looked up at the
clock and in five minutes the class would be over, then she heard it
Isabella this question is for you her head started to spin she did not know
the answer.She looked up at the teacher and said, iiii dooont kknow she
was upset and stuttering the cool girls all started to laugh at her,then
the bell rang, it was end of class. Isabella got up and ran out the cool
girls ran after her calling out iii dooont kknow. She raced home and
ran straight to her room and lay on her bed crying then she said to
herself ,I will never talk again. The next day when she got up she never
spook to her mom or dad and she never said one word at school. The
headmaster rang her mum and told her the problem they were having with
Isabella. They took her to the doctors and then to a speech specialists
and he told them there was nothing wrong with her throat with a lot of
rest her voice might come back.
Chapter two The Farm
As the next day was school holidays her mum rang her Grandad who had a
farm .and told him about Isabella problem and could she come and stay
for a wile.He was so happy to see her again he told them to put her on
the train and he will be waiting for her. The next day she arrived at the
small railway station out in the country and her Grandad was waiting for
her with his old car and his old dog Toby. Over the next few days he
never tried to get her to speak,he just let her run around the farm feeding
the hens and the goats. She was having a good time she loved the animals.
Then one morning he asked her to go into the forest, and pick some
mushrooms as he had taught her so of she went taking Toby with her. She
was putting some mushrooms in her basket when she heard tweet tweet and
when she looked around she saw a small bird on the ground he was trying
to fly but he could not ,she picked him up and put him in her basket and
found a worm for him to eat. The mother bird flew down and sat on the
basket. Isabella looked at it and said don't worry, I will look after him
and when he can fly I will let him go. She walked along looking for more
mushrooms and the mother bird followed her. Then she heard a noise in the
grass and when she looked it was a baby rabbit with his foot caught in a
trap she set him free but he could not walk as his foot hurt so she put
him in the basket and asked were do you live he pointed to a hill. When
she got to the top of the hill she saw all the rabbit warrens where the
rabbits lived but there was no rabbits. She called out down one of the
warrens and heard a thump thump then as she looked a little nose with
whiskers popped out and hopped over to the baby rabbit and started to lick
his sore leg, she took him out and the mother rabbit took him down the
warren she said good bye .and started to go back to the farm. She got her
Grandad to check the little bird, and he told her it was OK and would
fly in a day or two and to leave it on the windowsill so the mother can
come to feed him.
Chapter Three The Owl
That night when she was laying in bed looking out the window at the moon
and the old dead tree she noticed a owl sitting on one of the branches
then to her surprise he flew down and perched on the end of her bed she
wasn't frighten as she loved animals. He looked at her with his big owl
eyes and then he said you were very kind to the bird and the baby
rabbit and I heard you speak when you called out for the mother rabbit,
and I know the cool girls make fun of you at school.She asked how do you
know all this, he replied I am a very wise old owl and the cool girls
at school are not cool girls they are fool girls they make fun of you
because they are worried that the kids will make fun of them. So
remember they are not cool girls they are fool girls, and then he flew
out the window. In the morning when she woke up and looked in the basket
the little bird was and she looked out the window at the old dead
tree and thought was I dreaming about the wise old owl. She ran down
stairs and said good morning Grandad what's for breakfast, he was so happy
she was talking and when they had finished breakfast she would not stop
talking she asked him do owls talk to people he thought for a minute and
told her that some of the old people say that the wise old owl will only
talk to you if you are special.
Chapter Four Cool Girls
Her mum and dad were waiting for her when she got off the train and
were so delighted that she was talking again and she told them all about
the the little bird the baby rabbit and the owl. Her dad said to the mum I
think she must have dreamt it. Two days later it was time to go back to
school she was sitting with her two best friends when the cool girls
came up and said iii dooont kknow and started to laugh Isabella stood up
and said You are not cool girls you are only Fool girls, they looked at
her because she did not stutter so they stormed off. Her two best
friends said Isabella you do not stutter any more. Later on one of the
cool girls came up to Isabella and said I am sorry for what I said about
you, Isabella said that's OK would you like to sit with us, I am telling a
story about a little bird a rabbit and a owl and after my mum is going
to take us for some KFC would you like to come with us.
