Absent-minded Grandma
Born 1950, F, from Chennai, IndiaAbsent-minded Grandma
Ram, Kamali, and Grandpa were sitting in the park and talking. Grandpa had returned after a month after worshipping in various temples. Grandma could not accompany him because of her knee pain. While talking, he referred to Grandma as an absent-minded professor.
Kamali: Why are you calling Grandma, absent-minded Professor?
Grandpa: She forgets always and does silly things.
Ram: Please tell us what she did Grandpa?
Grandpa: One day, she was making ladies finger fry. Ladies finger has to be washed first, dried and then only is cut. With water, they will become soapy smooth and fry cannot be done. Grandma knows the fact.
Kamali: Then what happened?
Grandpa: Despite her precautions, when she tried to fry, with enough oil, it did not get fried. It became soapy and after struggling with it, she came to me and complained "You have brought low-quality ladies fingers. You get cheated easily."
Ram: Did you quarrel with her?
Grandpa: I went inside the kitchen. After checking for a while, I found the reason for ladies fingers becoming soapy. She has stored salt and the soap powder both in empty oats containers. I saw two containers in the kitchen, one with soap powder and one with salt. I asked her to taste the thing she was making. It was soapy in taste. She ran to the washbasin and gargled. She has put soap instead of salt.
Kamali: Foolish Grandma.
Ram likes his Grandma very much. He protested.
Ram: Grandma is not foolish. She helps to solve the toughest problems for me and suggests to me the easiest ways for solving the problems. Somebody might have kept the soap powder in the kitchen.
Grandpa: It is still a mystery. Nobody owned his/her mistake.
Ram: Then why do you blame Grandma?
Grandpa: If you support your Grandma that much, you have to hear another episode.
Kamali's interest was aroused.
Kamali: Please tell us, Grandpa.
They had bought a flat recently and moved to the flat.
Grandpa: One day, when we were staying in the rented house, this happened. Your Grandma herself told me this. Two aunties from the neighborhood needed some help from Grandma. Grandma explained what they wanted, I forgot what it was, maybe some recipe. And they started to depart.
It was evening, time for lighting the lamp. Grandma used to light the lamp and give kumkum and fruits before sending off ladies. So she asked them to wait for five minutes. They were waiting in the hall.
Grandma went to the kitchen. In that house, the room for worship and the kitchen are the same. She put oil in the lamp and tried to light the lamp. It was going off. Again and again, she tried and it went off every time. So she took another lamp and tried to light that. Again the same result. She changed the wick. The same thing happened. She was almost on the verge of crying.
Finally, she prayed to God and thought calmly. So, everything had been changed except oil. Then the reason came to her mind vividly. She had stored oil in an empty, washed, and dried dishwashing liquid container. How could she light the lamp if liquid soap was used instead of oil? She hurriedly poured the liquid from the lamp into an empty bowl, washed and dried the lamp, found the oil, and lighted the lamp.
After a short prayer, she offered visitors kumkum and fruits. When she narrated this to me, in the night, she remembered my advice, not to store like this, for her there is a chance of confusion.
Ram and Kamali laughed and both at the same time told, "Poor Grandma."
Grandpa: Do you accept, your Grandma does silly things, Ram?
Ram: But we have a story to tell you, Grandpa. The same habit of Grandma giving kumkum to ladies saved us from a loss. In your absence, one interesting incident happened. It happened just one week back. Grandma was making some snacks for us. Yesterday you ate that.
Grandpa: Oh! Ribbon pagodas.
Kamali: Yes. Two women came and they were collecting donations for an orphanage. Father was talking to them and gave some money to them and mother gave some old clothes for children in the orphanage. When the women were about to depart, grandma, as usual, offered them kumkum and fruits. The fan was on and the kumkum powder flew and fell into their eyes. Some went into grandma's eyes too.
The ladies dropped the bags they were holding and running for the water to wash their eyes. Grandma too went and washed her eyes.
Dad and Mom came there. They found our silver lamps, Mom's cell phone, and some money in those bags. They were open cloth bags. So everything fell. The other items in the bags too created a doubt that they were stolen. Two of our neighbors rushed to our house, complaining of some theft by these ladies.
Finally, the police were called and the ladies were handed over to them. Grandma was having some pain in her eyes. Still, she recognized the neighbors and gave the police some important information. In all the three houses, that is in the two neighbors' and ours, the same servant Bhanu was working. So Bhanu was also arrested.
Grandpa: Kumkum cannot cause such a problem, it is unbelievable.
Ram: It was not kumkum. The kumkum with the silver container was among the stolen items.
Kamali: Grandma searched for that, she could not find it. She had, in a bowl, measured chilly-powder and kept for making snacks. She brought it absent-mindedly thinking that it was kumkum.
Grandpa: Oh, that is how she became the detective.
Ram: You seem to be jealous of grandma. Not necessary, she did a silly thing. She told Mom, Dad, and others not to give complaints and suggested the inspector keep an eye on them.
Grandpa, Kamali, and Ram were walking back to the house.
Grandpa: But how did the inspector accept it?
Ram: Yes, I too thought about that. If they were left free, Bhanu would find a job somewhere and they would continue their activities uninterrupted.
They reached home and to their astonishment, they found the police inspector there, talking to Dad and Mom. We knew from Dad that the network of Bhanu and others was very big. They followed them, traced several mobile, landline calls, and could arrest the whole gang. He thanked grandma for suggesting to keep an eye on the ladies
Mom: The Inspector got a promotion and he told, the commissioner was talking about rewarding Grandma. Grandma told the inspector to get the reward for him because he did the hard work and he should not drag her name.
Dad: She told the inspector everything happened accidentally and she did not do anything. Mom is great!
Now Grandpa was jealous of grandma.
