True Love
Jaggu and Nimmy were married for ten years and had no kids. They adopted a child and named him Ram. Since he was the only child, he was pampered by them and he was given all love and care. Then within five years, they got two more kids, Anand and Anupama. Gradually, as her children grew, Nimmy's affection and care towards Ram decreased. From the servants' gossip, Ram came to know that he was an adopted son. But, at any time he can rely upon Jaggu, whose affection to him grew more and more, seeing his performance in the school, his proper behavior, and his other talents. After knowing the fact that he was adopted, Ram started developing insecurity in mind.
Nimmy was never harsh to him. But she did not realize, even though he was ten years old, he was still a child. Sometimes, Nimmy scolded Ram for eating more sweets, for seeing a cartoon film at late night, and so on. Maybe, she should have been a little less harsh, when advising him. But, Ram loved Nimmy and he longed for her affection. He took good care of his brother and sister, helped them in studies and other activities.
Sometimes, when Nimmy scolded him, he would feel, she has no love left for him and when sleeping he would cry bitterly and silently and his pillow would become wet. To some extent, Jaggu knew this. But he thought Nimmy's attitude would change. But nothing happened and his pillow became drenched with tears every night.
His pillow could not stand this. One day, it talked to him.
Pillow: "Why are you crying, Ram?"
Ram turned here and there, he could not see anybody. He thought,
"The God may be talking to me." Anyhow he was craving for kind words. So he answered.
Ram: "I took one more cake at the dining table. My mother scolded me."
Pillow: "Okay, nothing wrong with that, more sweets may spoil your health."
Ram: "But, when she tells to Anand and Anupama, she tells the same very kindly. She shows partiality."
Pillow: "You are ten years old, Ram, and they are younger."
Ram: "So you feel I am at fault."
Pillow: "Did I tell that? Now, have you brushed your teeth?"
Ram: "No."
Pillow: "Your mother taught you to brush in the night, is it not?"
Ram: "Yes."
Pillow: "How she can still be teaching you? Other kids should learn, is it not?"
Ram went and brushed and remembered his teacher telling students in the class about eating sweets. It is harmful to the teeth and cavities may develop because of eating sweets and not brushing.
Ram was convinced and he brushed and slept peacefully that night.
Daily, he had talked with his pillow and he thought, God was coming inside the pillow and talking to him. The pillow gave him very good advice. One day he told the pillow that he knew he was an adopted son and that's why his mother was partial towards her kids.
Pillow: "Even if it is true, it is natural Ram. But, you have to see another angle. You were adopted from an orphanage, right?"
Ram: "Yes."
Pillow: "Your father and mother might have been dead. But you are treated very well here, you are studying in a good school and all other ways, you are treated like their own son. The only exception is your mother's attitude towards you, that is your thinking, correct? You think that you are one among the ashram boys and compare your position here with that. You will understand."
Ram remembered going to an ashram and distributing food on his birthdays. And he could now very well understand he should be thankful to God and his parents and should not complain. The God in the pillow advised him to show true love to his mother and her heart will change.
Ram stopped crying. He wished the pillow morning and night, with a kiss. He loved his parents more and he thought they were God's gifts to him.
One day Jaggu was on an office tour. He would take one week to come back, that's what he was telling Mom. The very next day Nimmy got an infection and fever. Ram took it as his duty to call the doctor. The doctor examined his mother and gave a prescription. Ram cycled and got the medicines. The medicines were for one week. The fever was very high and according to the Doctor, it may take three days to come down to normal temperature. Nimmy should be given a sponge bath frequently so that the temperature should not go high. A maidservant was there. With her help, Ram managed everything. He fed her the porridge, frequently wiping her forehead, face, arms and legs with warm water and he did not sleep for three days. On the fourth day, the fever came down. All these days, she was making her pillow wet. But her pillow did not talk to her. She understood Ram's, true love. Ram has taken six days of leave. He did not want to leave his mother in the maid's hands until she ate well and became strong. He made soup and juice for her. He took care that everything needed was at home. He gave the medicines very regularly. Apart from that, he helped the children to take bath, wear the uniform, in their homework, and so on. When his father returned from the tour he saw the doctor there. The doctor was saying, "She is perfect." And Nimmy was answering him "All credits go to Ram." The father heard and understood everything. True love can transform the heart. It can change even the toughest mindset.
That day Ram thanked his pillow and the pillow took leave from Ram. The pillow never talked to him again. Who is the pillow? Is it God, or his biological mother? We do not know. But Ram never left the habit of kissing it, hugging it, and sleeping.
