Control your anger
Born 1950, F, from Chennai, IndiaControl your anger.
Ram was the son of Venkatesh and Savithri. He had a younger sister, Kamali. Ram and Kamali were very fond of each other. His Grandpa and Grandma also lived with them. Ram was very good in all aspects, but one problem with him was, he would start shouting if something happened, which he did not like. He would not even think before shouting.
His elders often advised him against his short-temper. But he continued in his way without even trying to know his problem. One day, their servant entered his room and dusted all his books and other things. This he did on the bid of his mother. But he was not well educated, so he mixed library books with school books and so on. When Ram came to his room he started shouting. Even though the servant knew Ram very well and liked him for his generosity, he felt bad and told Savithri, "Mother I have not studied enough to know the difference between books. Please, you see some other servant. I shall not work here." Savithri pacified him and told him that they want only him as the servant. After he went, she called Ram. She told him "Anger is a brief madness." Ram told, "Ma, don't irritate me by giving quotes. I am already maddened by your servant. I may take one hour to set right the whole thing." He inquired, "Who asked him to dust my room?" Savithri quickly went out because she knew his anger might turn towards her.
Within a week something happened. Ram's and his father's shoe size was the same. Both of them ran daily in the morning. Ram always ran with two of his friends. One day Ram and his friends assembled in his house and discussed the school debate. The three of them were talking on the same side and they were deciding the strategies for winning. So they started 15 minutes later than the usual time. His father had already left. Ram found his shoes were not there. Finally, he concluded that his father might be using his shoes and he was correct. His father was an absent-minded person. Even though they had selected different colors of shoes, he forgot his color and wore Ram's shoes. Ram shouted angrily, "Could Dad forget the color of his shoes?" His grandma came out. She told, "Ram, mind your words. You are talking about your father. Anger is one letter short of danger."
Now Ram's anger turned towards his Grandpa. "Grandpa is daily writing one quote on the whiteboard. In our house, everybody started quoting. Fortunately, Kamali had not started yet." At that moment Kamali came out and hugged him and so he went out, wearing his father's shoes, with a smiling face.
Such occasions were not rare in his school also. His classmates would always borrow his classwork if they were absent on any day. He got highly irritated at those times. "Why from me always?" As usual, he would shout. Anyhow he would not refuse to help. He always helped. With his teachers also he had shown his impatience. At least he had the sense to control his anger at those times.
One day Ram's class teacher met his grandpa in a restaurant and they were discussing Ram. The teacher praised Ram, but he could not avoid complaining about his short-temper and shouting. Grandpa said, "The same story at home too." And they made a plan. They joined in their plan three of Ram's classmates, John, Abdul and, Krish. They had three short meetings.
The team went on with its plan. The previous day Keshav was absent from school. He had a slight fever. He asked Ram. "Can you give your notes for copying yesterday's portions? I shall copy them in the lunchtime." Ram, as usual, started shouting. Keshav kept quiet. But Ram did all the help finally.
Now Krish started, "Ram, you are looking majestic when you are shouting. Your anger gives you a stately look."
Ram: "But, even Kamali says, my face goes red and she is scared."
Abdul, "She is just a child. How can she know? We, your class-mates are respecting you because of your anger. You stay unique."
Ram: "Impossible to believe! My parents and grand-parents think I am not behaving properly."
John: "You test yourself. For a few days control your anger and check."
Ram: "Can you suggest to me how to control my anger?"
The three of them were ready with the suggestions provided by the teacher and the grandpa.
They talked together and made Ram angry again. Finally, they came with three simple methods to control anger.
Count down to 10. If you're really mad, start at 100. In the time it takes you to count, your heart rate will slow, and your anger will likely subside.
Anger will subside by taking slow, deep breaths from your nose and exhaling out of your mouth for several moments.
When you're angry, you may be tempted to let the angry words fly, so don't talk.
All the three shouted, "That's all."
So Ram took a resolution to control his anger and check his friend's and parent's reactions. It was not easy for him. For a couple of days, without awareness, he would start shouting. First, he developed the awareness that he was angry and tried to follow these methods. Sometimes, he would remember his grandma telling him to chant God's name when he got angry. He found his grandma's method easier to follow. Somehow Ram gradually became peaceful and nobody could tell him, he was short-tempered. Kamali was always around him. At home, he enjoyed everybody's care and affection more than before.
In school, his friends, especially, when they came to borrow books, would explain, why they were borrowing from him.
"Ram, your hand-writing is neat and beautiful and you write without a single mistake. That's why we borrow from you. Even though you were impatient, you always help. We know it is inconvenient for you. Sorry and thanks.”
Now Ram understood that an angry person could not get so much love and respect. When he talked to Abdul John and Krish, he understood the scheme of his teacher and grandpa. He thanked his grandpa and with him went and thanked the teacher.
He heard Kamali consoling their grandma, "Grandma, don't worry. Ram nowadays is not getting angry. He will not get blood pressure." He hugged Kamali as usual with a broad smile on his face. He found himself happier than ever.
