Make Anu happy.
Born 1950, F, from Chennai, IndiaMake Anu happy
Ram, an IIM graduate from Ahmadabad was working in a multinational company. With his intelligence and high skills, he had reached the top position quickly. His meteoric rise brought him appreciation from colleagues. All wanted to become his friends. But he chose his friends carefully. Kishore and Vasanth became his good friends because of their good conduct
One day, after completing a project, Ram and his friends were relaxing in a Café.
Kishore asked, “Ram, why are you always serious?”
Ram just smiled.
Vasanth told, “You are different from others, why?”
Again he too got a smile from Ram.
Both the friends knew he was not married and staying with his mother.
Vasanth: “Get married. You will be cheerful.”
Kishore: “Yes, Vasanth is correct.”
Ram: “If marriage makes me lose my happiness?”
Kishore: “How it is possible?”
Ram: “I love my mother and my only aim is to keep her happy. Marriage, we can’t predict will help me in fulfilling my aim or go against it.”
Vasanth: “That is true. Nobody can predict.”
Kishore”: “But I want to know the reason for your aim. Your mother will never approve your reason for not getting married.”
Ram: “Naturally. But, for me my mother is special. I don’t take risks. It may affect another girl’s life also.”
Kishore: “We are puzzled by your words.”
Ram: “If you hear my story, you will understand.”
Vasanth and Kishore: “Please tell.”
Ram started.
“I don’t remember seeing my father. When I was 10 years old, I learned from people around that my parents’ was an inter-cast love marriage. The families of my father and mother were against the marriage and both the families disowned my parents. My father was a brilliant person, had a good earning and kept us comfortably in a small flat, his own one, in a decent locality. But misfortune came in the form of a train accident, which took his life. This happened when I was just two years old. So I have seen him only in photos. Since that time my mom is living only for me.
She worked very hard. She worked in a supermarket as a receptionist on part-time basis. She wanted to be at home when my school was over. She took maximum care that I got good dresses, good food, and good education. So sitting in the house, she will stitch blouses for neighbors. Since her rates were cheaper and she introduced new designs, she became very popular soon. She completed big orders staying awake throughout the night. She had some assistants too. I asked her once “You have saved enough. You have good deposits in the bank. And is it necessary to overwork?” Her answer was “Wait and see. When you go for higher studies, more and more money we shall need.” Her only goal is me and my future. So I made my goal “always to see her happy.” I worked hard, participated in debates and competitions, won prizes and every time brought a smile to her face. By getting eligibility for joining all the IIMs, I made her happy. My growth is her goal and her happiness is my goal.
Hope you understand now.”
Ram bought a big house for his mother and requested to do her work as a pastime and a social service, giving employment to women in need. Marriage proposals were coming from everywhere, but his mindset was against marriage.
Ram wanted to leave. He felt they were sitting in the café for a long time. But his friends stayed back.
After confirming that Ram had left, they called Anu, who was sitting at another table, from where she could hear everything they talked. Anu is Kishore’s cousin. She studied in the same school, where Ram studied. She was always enchanted by his intelligence and by the way he carried himself. Only on her request, Kishore and Vasanth invited Ram to the café and talked about his marriage.
Kishore said “Anu, you heard what Ram was telling. It is not good to chase him. What he feels is true. And in our lives, we are experiencing the difficulty of managing the balance between parents and the spouses.”
Vasanth: Cent percent I agree with Kishore.”
Anu: Why should I leave him alone? My respect and love for him increased multiple times after hearing his life story. I respect and love his mother too now. I really want to see her.”
And the very next day she paraded to Ram’s place. She met his mother and asked for some work, as a trainee in blouse designing. Ram’s mother’s age and experience told her “This girl does not want any work or training. She has come to me for a different purpose.” Her way of dressing and the air of confidence in her revealed that she should be very rich. Anyhow Ram’s mother took her as a trainee giving her a handsome stipend. So many days went by. She did not start stitching. But one thing she did. She found out very minute defects in other’s work and in this way helped in improving the quality. She was promoted as the manager. Ram’s mother was impressed by her work and she observed her eyes following Ram when he was at home.
Ram’s mother found out why she had come here. She thought “If Ram likes her I shall talk to her parents about their marriage.” She talked to Ram. But Ram did not yield. He knew well Anu was beautiful and with her sweet voice and gentle talk she would win over anybody. But he had a tough mindset, which warned him his marriage may bring some problems with his goal in life. He sensed danger and he controlled his senses with alertness. One day his mother told him “Ram! Marry Anu and keep her happy. That is my happiness.” But he dodged her. Years rolled on.
One day, nobody expected it. But it happened. Ram’s mother did not get up from her sleep. Ram shouted and cried, all in vain. A doctor was called. He gave a certificate which said “cardiac arrest.” Rituals went on. Anu, Kishore, and Vasanth were helping. They attended the rituals daily. Ram was very upset and he felt his life meaningless. His mom was the world to him.
When all the rituals were over, Anu came and took leave. Ram asked her as if inspired by somebody “Will you marry me?” Anu was waiting for this for a long time and in her middle age, she got the offer. She held his hands and shed tears. And everything went on smoothly and the marriage was conducted in a simple way. Ram’s goal remained the same but the process changed. “Make Anu happy.”

02/07/2021A very patient lady to wait this long for marriage. Children are not normally this devoted to a parent.
You wrote your story well.
Help Us Understand What's Happening

02/07/2021Thanks. I am not a natural story writer. I do this because I want to occupy myself in old age. Such a considerate comment. But in India, especially in Chennai, joined family structure is fading off. If husband and wife live together, it is a joint family now. Parents work hard and sacrifice a lot, which children may not know. They should at least spare some time and care for their parents.
