The Power of silence
Born 1950, F, from Chennai, IndiaThe power of silence
It was corona time. Revathi and Rajan started going to the office, the children, Ram and Pushpa stayed at home. Children were attending online classes. Rajan and Revathi were working in their workplaces. Rajan’s parents were at home taking care of them.
When Rajan and Revathi were working at home, it was smooth for grandma. She would take good participation in the household work happily. When the workload increased, it was difficult for her to manage. Her son and daughter in law took all the efforts to keep her comfortable. They bought a dishwasher for her. They did the deep cleaning for her on Saturdays and Sundays. When they were at home, whatever they could do, they were doing that. Grandpa and the children were taking care of the garden.
In spite of all these, because of old age, grandma would feel tired soon. In her pain, she would start talking continuously. The subject matter of her talk would be her pain, what she was doing the old day, when her mother in law was at her age, how she took care of her etc…etc. Grandpa would advise her. “Realize the situation Bhagirathi. Raj and Revathi don’t want a servant inside the house because we old people and Ram and Pushpa are susceptible to infection. They bought this house, keeping in mind our comfort. They are still paying the loan back. In spite of that, they bought the dishwasher also. If you are feeling tired take rest for some time and don’t try to be perfect in every job.” Still, she would continue her talking. Rajan did not find grandma’s talks offensive, but Revathi did not relish.
Months rolled on like this. One day grandpa was very angry for some reason. At that time he could not tolerate Grandma’s talks and shouted at her “Can’t you be silent while working. You are becoming mad and making others also mad.” Grandma shed tears and she suddenly became silent. She sat for some time. She applied some balm to her knees and started working. She arranged the washed vessels in their proper places. Took clothes from the wire and folded them. She started the washing machine collecting the clothes from different bathrooms, cleaning the bathrooms, and so on. She felt sad because grandpa scolded her for the first time after their marriage. But she took his advice in the proper sense and followed.
A couple of days went on. One day children’s online classes were over. Pushpa told Ram “Grandma is angry with us. She is not talking. Did you observe?” Ram told “She has some pain. I saw her applying ointment.” Both of them decided to help grandma. Grandma was taking the clothes from the wire. They went to the kitchen. Pushpa knew where to keep the vessels. Both of them arranged the washed vessels in their proper places. Grandma had finished cooking. Both cleaned the stove and the places around. They came out and folded all the clothes and put them in proper places.
Grandma went to the kitchen and saw. All the works already completed. It was time for lunch. When she started to bring foodstuff to the dining table the children helped a lot. All of them sat together and ate. Children helped in cleaning the dining table too.
Grandpa was seeing everything going on. Definitely, he too felt like contributing. From the next day, he assisted the children in drying and folding clothes. As usual, they together watered the plants. Preparation of evening milk, coffee became his job. Whatever he needed he took himself from the kitchen. He used to call grandma even for a cup of water. Grandma’s astonishment knew no bounds. After rest, she started preparing snacks for everybody. All enjoyed well. Kids requested grandma to play Scrabble with them. Grandma told strictly “Finish your homework first.” Grandma cleared their doubts and they finished the homework. They were playing Scrabble with grandma and grandpa.
Rajan and Revathi were back from the office. They saw children playing. Revathi started shouting “What about homework?” “Done,” both of them told together. Later Revathi learned from children what happened. Rajan and Revathi also got the spirit. They decided to get up daily half an hour earlier and make something, which would provide an additional variety for lunch. They made morning coffee and milk and served everybody.
On weekends they had moonlight dinner on the terrace.
They played board games. They saw movies together.
Their home became a Happy home, and that is the power of silence.
