The ghost from christmas past
Born 2007, F, from Sabah, MalaysiaThe four sisters couldn’t be so different from each other. They were all gathered around their fireplace to keep warm during the cold weather while their mum was busy making food in the kitchen and their dad was working in the office upstairs. They weren’t rich or poor and they didn’t have a big modern house to live in. They lived in a small cozy house that had a big bedroom to fit four of them with their own bed and one master bedroom for their parents. They had been living in this ever since they were born. Even though they had a small house, they never really complained about it.
Emma, the oldest sister, was sitting on one of the chairs with a newspaper in front of her and solving all the problems on it. She was the only sister that wore glasses because she would secretly read books and solve newspaper problems in her dark room at night and that damaged her eyes so she had to wear glasses. Evelyn, the second oldest sister, was slouching on the couch while chewing gum loudly. She was the only one on the couch since she didn’t like sharing and it was the coziest spot. Ella, the third oldest sister and Ester, the youngest sister, were both playing chess with each other. Ella was curled up with a blanket around her and their dog while Ester was lying on her stomach with a big smile on her face. Ella didn’t like it when people asked her questions but Ester was more than happy to chat with anyone.
It was Christmas but none of the sisters were feeling the Christmas spirit. They were all stuck at home due to the pandemic. You could only hear Emma talking to herself while solving the math problem from the newspaper, Evelyn chewing her gum loudly and Ester laughing happily because she won again from the chess game she was playing with Ella. “Ester, can you please help me”, her mum shouted from the kitchen. “Ok”, she replied. So she got up and made her way to the kitchen. While Ella was waiting for Ester, she went to the bookshelf to find a magazine to look at. As she was reaching for a magazine, a pink book fell onto the floor. “There isn’t any wind in the house so how did this book fall”, Ella wondered to herself. She thought that maybe a ghost was trying to catch her attention by pushing the book. She picked it up anyway and looked at the cover.
It had a pretty pink bow in the middle and around the bow were pink hearts. She went back to her spot and opened the book. It was a photo album. It was filled with pictures of when they were young. She started laughing loudly when she saw a photo of Evelyn crying, when they were playing a skipping game, and she missed the rope and fell. It was unusual for her to laugh so loudly so Emma decided to sit next to her to see what she was laughing about. As soon as she saw that picture, she started laughing and crying at the same time. Memories of when they were younger filled her head and she felt happy. Evelyn then asked, “What are you both laughing about?”. “Look at this”, Ella told Evelyn. Evelyn wasn’t happy when she knew that her sisters were laughing at her. But she couldn’t hold it in so she also burst out laughing.
After helping mum in the kitchen, Ester sprinted back to the living room. To her surprise, she found all her sisters sitting together in front of the fireplace laughing happily. She knew that they normally didn’t get along well with each other so she slowly sneaked up to them to see what they were doing. They were holding a photo album. When she saw that photo, she started crying from laughing. Then Emma had an idea. She went into their old toy box and dug in to look for the same skipping rope in the photo. After a few seconds of looking she pulled out a pink skipping rope that was very tangled. So they spent a few minutes together untangling the rope. Finally, they all put on their coats, beanies, gloves and boots, since it was winter and it was snowing outside, and raced outside. They started jumping together and running around chasing each other on the snow, having so much fun.Their mum then looked out the window to see where all the laughing was coming from. She saw all four of them playing and laughing together. She was happy to see the four of them getting along with each other on Christmas. Not only was her mum happy, but the Ghost from Christmas past. The ghost was the one who pushed the photobook so that they could remember the memories they used to have together. The ghost was happy. He went around every house and tried to cheer everyone up with memories. Their house was the last house he had to visit. He then gave a big smile and vanished and he will be back again for next Christmas to make more people happy.
