EVERY FULL MOON
Born 2007, F, from Male', MaldivesChapter 1: Death bells.
Pin drop silence. There I was looking out the window as the sun was starting to set. No cars. No cycles. No airplanes. Nothing. Everyone was at home protecting themselves from the death bells.
For all I know, death bells ring every full moon night. It usually rings a few minutes after the moon appears. Anyone who hear the ringing will be transferred to a whole different dimension. They say that anyone who ever goes into that dimension can never come back. But I don’t believe that. I mean, there HAS to be a way….. right?
I was home alone. My parents were at my grandma’s house and my little brother was at a cousin’s house. Before leaving, my parents told me a million times to put my earmuffs on, after sunset. I did as I was told.
I put on my roller skates and started skating around the house. BANG! I fell while trying to do a trick. Oh no! My ear muffs. They fell too and broke. DING DONG! The death bells rang. I HEARD IT!
I was now in the middle of nowhere. Literally, there was nothing around me. I screamed for help. But of course, no answer. The sky was red. ALL RED with No clouds. No birds. Just red. I was terrified.
chapter 2: Bubbles
As I started walking further, I saw many tiny beings floating in the distance. I couldn’t tell what they were. Scared and confused, I began to walk towards it.
They were mysterious creatures that I’ve never seen before. They were like humans, but different. They had glowing green eyes with widely opened mouths and sharp teeth. Their hair looked as if it was made of water. Even though they were stuck in midair, their hair was flowing like water. “Wow”, I whispered to myself as I observed the strange beings. I grabbed one off their feet. AAAAAH! It came right off. THE FOOT SEPERATED FROM THE REST OF IT’S BODY! It fell to the ground. As much as I wanted to run away, I was very suspicious. It stared at me and grabbed its foot out of my hand. “Gross”, I cried, as it attached its foot back to its body. Disgusting but magical. “Why are you here?”, it asked in a robotic voice. “I- um- I heard the death bells and somehow got transferred to here”, I replied. “GET OUT!”, it yelled. I nodded my head and started to walk away.
“Hey, down here”, I heard a voice. “AAAAAAH!”, I screamed as I saw a little talking bunny near my foot. “Pick me up”, the bunny insisted. “Absolutely not! I’m not going to trust a talking bunny!”, I said. “Trust me, your day is going to keep getting weirder and weirder”, it told me. “Fine”, I sighed. I gently picked the bunny up. “My name is Bubbles the bunny and I will help you get out”, it told me. “Hurry up then!”, I said impatiently. “Keep walking, we are close to Cotton candy’s castle”, Bubbles said. “Cotton candy?”, I asked. “Yes, she is the one who decides whether or not we can go to Teddy’s castle”, Bubbles replied. “Teddy?” I asked. “Yes, Teddy the teddy bear is the one who rings the death bells. You have to ask her to get back to your world”, Bubbles smiled. “Ok but why exactly does she ring the death bells?”, I asked curiously. “Because she is lonely and wants visitors”, Bunny sighed.
A few minutes later, Bubbles and I reached Cotton candy’s castle. It was not what I expected. It looked dull and spooky. The walls had cracks all over it. I quietly opened the door. “Um, where’s Cotton candy?”, I asked bubbles. “HERE”, it was a grey Cotton candy. A big, talking grey cotton candy. Bubbles jumped to the floor. Cotton candy shook her wand at Bubbles. I couldn’t believe my eyes! Bubbles turned into a witch. “You’re not a bunny?”, I yelled. “You were right. You shouldn’t have trusted a talking bunny”, Bubbles the witch laughed. Cotton candy walked towards me and shook her wand at me. I started floating. “What are you doing to me?”, I yelled. “Have you met the glow buddies?”, the gloomy Cotton candy asked. “What?” I was confused. “You know, the ones who were floating in midair. They can’t move until someone touch them. They can’t see until I touch their eyes. They will be in my world FOREVER!”, Cotton candy screamed. “You are slowly going to turn into one, in the span of seven hours”, Bubbles said. “I’m going to sleep now”, Cotton candy said. She flew up to a tree in her castle and hung upside down like a bat. “BUBBLES COME!”, she yelled. “Yes master”, Bubbles sighed.
“Say her name three times after she sleeps”, Bubbles whispered to me. I nodded. Why is Bubbles being nice to me all of a sudden? Is this ANOTHER trick? I thought.
Cotton candy was asleep. So was Bubbles. “Cotton candy”, I whispered three times like I was told to. I smiled as I landed back on the ground. “You’re welcome”, Bubbles whispered to me. “Weren’t you sleeping?”, I asked. Bubbles smiled at me. I tiptoed my way out of the castle. I let out a sigh of relief and headed faster to Teddy’s castle.
chapter 3: Master teddy
“This must be it. Teddy’s castle”, I whispered under my breath. Teddy’s castle stood tall in the middle of tall and creepy trees. I took a deep breath. I grabbed the rusted doorknob and slowly opened the cracked wooden door. The door screeched as I opened it. The castle was quieter than a library. “Hello….” I said. I heard my voice echo back. “There you are”, I heard a voice say from the distance after a few seconds. “Teddy?”, I asked. “Master teddy”, Teddy replied. Teddy was a huge talking teddy bear with rips all over her. She looked old and fierce. She came up to me and stared at me for a minute or two. “What do you want”, Teddy asked me. “To go back to my family and friends please”, I answered politely. “Must be nice having friends and a family”, Teddy whispered. I nodded. “Follow me”, Teddy insisted. I followed her upstairs till we reached a huge metal door. “What’s in there?”, I asked curiously. “You’ll see”, Teddy whispered. She gently opened the door. “Get in”, she insisted. “Why?”, I asked. She pushed me in and locked the door. “YOU WILL NOW LIVE THERE FORVER!”, Teddy yelled laughing furiously.
It was a tiny room. Grey walls and no furniture. The windows were damaged and foggy. There was no furniture except for a large cracked mirror in the corner. The room was very cold. I started banging on the door loudly. No answer. A tear rolled down my cheek as I sat on the broken wooden floor. “Psssst, reflection”, I heard a voice say. It sounded very familiar. I looked at the reflection. IT WAS BUBBLES. “Bubbles?”, I asked. Bubbles waved at me. I only saw bubbles in the reflection. “This is a magical mirror”, Bubbles said cheerfully. “I will get you out of here!”, Bubbles told me. “How?”, I asked. “Just touch the mirror”, Bubbles said. I reached out my hands with a smile. “What do you think you’re doing!”, Teddy yelled. She grabbed the mirror and took it away. “Don’t think that you’re ever going to get out of MY castle”, Teddy laughed loudly.
It has been three nights. Each night I have the same horrifying nightmare. It starts in the castle when I was exploring, until Teddy finds me and eats me whole. I was starting to lose hope.
BANG! It came from the window. I slowly opened it. “Bubbles! You came again!”, I said cheerfully. Bubbles came in. “How did you get in?”, I asked. “Magic”, Bubbles smiled. “I know how to get you out of here without master Teddy seeing us”, Bubbles told me. “That’s great”, I got excited. “But you might see terrifying things”, Bubbles added. I didn’t mind as long as I could get out from here. Bubbles swished her magic wand and opened the lock. Bubbles lead me to a tunnel. “Get in”, she said. I crawled my way in the tunnel. Bubbles followed behind me.
It wasn’t scary until we heard a loud scratching noise. “What was that”, I yelled. “You’ll see”, Bubbles shivered. In front of us appeared two doors. Both looked the same. “Which one is the right door?”, I asked. Bubbles was just as confused and terrified as me. I slowly opened the first door. WEREWOLVES!!! “CLOSE IT”, Bubbles yelled. I shut the door right before the werewolf jumped at us. It started scratching and banging on the door. “The werewolf will break the door soon!”, I cried. Bubbles didn’t listen. Instead, she took a little cauldron out of her pocket. She whispered gibberish to the cauldron.
BOOM! All of a sudden, we were out of the castle. “Where are we?”, I asked. “The place where we first met”, Bubbles explained. “Touch my cauldron”, she said. Confused and curious, I touched the cauldron. We got teleported AGAIN!
chapter 4: “RUN AWAY FROM THE GLOW BUDDIES”
This time we were in a narrow room full of glow buddies. Bubbles slowly reached her hand to touch a glow buddy. “Don’t touch it!”. I was too late. Bubbles started to shiver rapidly. “Bubbles, your eyes!”. Bubbles eyes were just like the glow buddies! Her hair started flowing like water and she began to float up. “BUBBLES NOOO!”, I cried. The glow buddies stared at me. “Get her!”, a glow buddy demanded. I ran straight for the door. The glow buddies weren’t the speediest. I ran as fast as I could without looking back.
“A dead end”, I whispered under my breath. A gold, shiny, glowing light appeared right in front of me. The glow buddies were catching up! I had no choice. “AAAAAAH!”, I yelled as I jumped in the portal.
“I’m home!”, I cried. My brother looked at me suspiciously. “Who are you”, he asked. “Y- your si- sister”, I stuttered. “I don’t have a sister, get out of this house!”, he yelled. “It’s my house too!” I yelled back. “MOM!” “DAD!”, he yelled.
That’s when I realized. People who hear the death bells do come back. But no one else ever remembers them…...
