The Saab
by I R HILL
The story began in the early hours, Ian was asleep when he was suddenly woken by a strange noise coming from the carport area, He rose from his warm bed still hazy from his deep sleep, he worked his way in the darkness of the room to the window that over looked the car port, his Saab was just visible from the window. There were two men standing by the car trying to work out how they could enter the vehicle without making too much noise and setting the security system off in the Saab, the Saab has an anti theft alarm like no other car. To their surprise Ian was standing in front of the car observing them, well gentlemen what seems to be your problem”? “Are you both lost”? They pair looked up, totally surprised by Ian's appearance, the biggest guy went for his gun, Ian was on top of him before he even blinked, he went down hard hitting the side of the carport and laid quite still on the ground, the second guy decided to run but Ian caught him across the back of his neck causing him to fall just behind the Saab. Ian commented as he fell, “watch my Saab fellow”. With both intruders dealt with he called the Police and reported what had happened. Twenty minutes later the police arrived and took both men into custody.
Ian gave his statement the next day at the local Police station about the event that that had unfolded the night before.
Ian's Saab was his pride and joy, the Saab was a 1999 9.3 2lt. Turbo Convertible, dark gray in colour, it had chrome quarter sections over the guards and twin pipes on the exhaust. On the front it had two chrome ten inch driving lights mounted on the registration bar bracket.
This was not the first time someone had attempted to steal his vehicle. With each year passing the value increased on the Saab. Latest valuation estimated the value at one hundred thousand dollars. He had been advised by the insurance company not to drive the Saab because of its value, just to garage the vehicle under lock and key. Ian loved driving his Saab, and no way would he just store it..
Monday Ian drove the Saab to his place of work parking it in its usual parking spot. He through the keys to the car park attendant and asked him to wash and polish his Saab, the man nodded at Ian.
Ian continued to the lift, stepped inside and pressed twelve, the lift traveled on up then came to a slow stop, Ian stepped out and walked the short distance to his office. On the top glass section of the entrance was engraved 'Ian Glass-Ton Investigations' in gold lettering. Ian opened the door and entered throwing his hat onto the stand in the corner to his left. His personal assistant looked up as said “good morning Ian”, Ian nodded and replied “good morning to you Ms White”. Ms White was a tall slender young woman around twenty five years old, she was dressed in a pale green tight fitting dress, her hair was auburn and draped on her shoulders.
She commented on Saturday nights attempt at two men trying to steal Ian's car without success. Ian replied “yes they tried without success” and smiled. Well Ms White “what have we planned today”? “There's a lady in your office who's life has been threatened by her Ex husband”, “and her name is”? “Janet Smith-Field”. Ian walked into his office placing his coat on the coat hanger, he turned to look at the lady sitting in front of his desk, she was of slender build, around thirty years old, very pretty with dark brown hair tied in a bun at the back, she wore a red dress with red high heel shoes and a large red hat the type a lady would wear to the horse races, her curvy legs were crossed with her right knee and thigh showing through the split in the dress that went twelve inches above the knee. Ian sat in his leather chair and looked straight at the lady and smiled. “Good morning Ms Smith-Field how can I help you”? “Mr Glass-Ton my Ex husband has sent me numerous text messages stating he will kill me”. “Have you been to the police”? “I have, but they tell me they have to catch him in the act”. “Is there is any evident he is going to kill you”? “No, he is very careful, never uses his own mobile phone or computer”. “How do you know it's him that's threatening you”? “I know its him because of the phrases he uses in the text messages”. “And the police do not believe you after showing them the text”?
“That's right”. “ Can you give my personal assistant Ms White your details and that of your Ex husband”?
“My fees are not cheap at five hundred a day plus expenses”. “I have no problems paying your fee, just stop my Ex husband”. “Leave it with me and I will be in touch in a few days”. The lady rose from the chair reached forward and shock Ian's hand, tipped her hat and left the office.
Ian looked down at his mobile on the desk as it rang, “hello Peter, have you any information for me”? Peter was an old mate of Ian's and a Protective Service Superintendent in the Federal Police based out of Canberra.
The two thieves that tried to steal your car are from overseas, these men are part of an on going AFP investigation”. “So what would bring two men from overseas to steal my car”? “Investigations allegedly are saying this gang are working in Australia, and stealing prestige cars and shipping them overseas. There is no firm evidences at this stage of the investigation, it is ongoing”. “Interesting”, “thanks Peter for the update”. The mobile went dead. Ian turned to his laptop computer covered in papers on his desk, he flipped open the top and proceeded to google stolen prestige cars, his eyes opened wide as he read, there were over two hundred stolen car in the past three years in Australia. Strange, he thought, how come the AFP have not cornered them.
This crew are well connected and must have prominent people protecting them, when we finally bring down there is going to be some high profile individuals with red faces going to jail.
He made another phone call concerning his ongoing second investigate, “Hi Ian what can I do for you”? “Jack I have a little job for you, can you check out this man?” “Hang on Ian I'll just find my pen and paper, go”, his name is John Plenty, he lives at forty nine Pleasant State Road Mildura, he drives a white late model BMW 321i, license plate GB555, “can you tell me where he goes, what he does for a living and if he has a girl friend”? “will do, I'll be in touch”, and the phone went dead.
Ian stood up from his desk collected his coat and proceeded to the door of his inner office, he stopped, he could hear raised voices in the outer office, he moved to the door that led straight into the corridor, quickly siding up to the glass section along side the entrance to his office suit. He could see two large men looming over Ms White, she looked very frightened, then suddenly she moved like grease lighten, the two men were laying across the sofa in the corner, both out cold. Ian poked his head around the door, “Nice work Ms White”, “who are they”? “They introduced themselves as private investigators working out of Mt Isa, they work for John Plenty”. “Boy, that's fast, Ms Smith- Field only just left our office”. “This is strange, what is going on? There is more to this than meets the eye Ms White”? Ian tipped his hat and headed to the lift.
The lift went down to parking area, Ian collected the keys to his Saab from the concierge . Driving out of the under cover car park he noticing a strange mud covered SUV parked across the street, the same SUV was parked there when he entered at nine am on the way to his office.
Texting Jack the registration number and proceeded down the highway towards Ocean view way. Pulling into the drive way of his unit, he noticed the same SUV had drawn on passed and parked three spaced down toward the beach. Parking his Saab in the new lock up car port and closed the gate.
Insurance company had insisted he secure the car port as soon as possible. There were signs tradesman had just left. He observed concrete dust still on the concrete floor as he stepped out of the Saab where they had secure the fence and sliding gate. The remote had been delivered to his office earlier that morning.
Walking along the path that led to his front door while texting local police about the strange SUV parked along the street. Ian told the Police it had been there before and looked like they were casing the area. Minutes later two patrol SUV pulled up along side the SUV, the Police climbed out their vehicles guns drawn, he watch the police remove the two men from the vehicle and man handled them into the waiting police vehicles. That's fixed that problem and I do not like being followed.
Ian moved quickly to the parked SUV after the police had disappeared around the bend, opening the SUV door with out much trouble, he search the glove compartment, under seats and the consul between the seats, there was very little in either compartment, hmmm, he thought, so what's this all about.
After an unsuccessful search of the SUV he re locked leaving nothing behind but the air and walked back over to his unit.
As well as the electronic gates the insurance company had installed CCTV to observe any further suspicious disruption twenty four hours a day. These precautions were at the persistence of Insurance company and you know persistent they can be!
The next morning came so quickly, his mobile was vibrating its head off on the dresser next to his bed, 'Okay already he said' reaching for the mobile, “good morning Ms. White”, ”There was another attempt on Ms Smith-Fields life last night, she was crossing the road and a car came straight at her, lucky your man was on his game”, “is she okay”? “Shaken but not stirred” replied Ms White, “very droll” replied Ian, there was laughter on the other end of the mobile, “ your man caught the license number of the car and photo of driver”, “clever boy that Mark”,
“I will text details asap” ,mobile rang off, then ping and information came through.
Immediately Ian sent a text to George (Police Inspector) in Brisbane the details then waited for a reply. Few minutes later George text back, 'yes we know of this chap he is Contract Killer out of the USA , I will check further to see if they have located an address', Ian text, 'I guess the plates would be false'? George text back, 'not this time, local Avis Rent a car, your AD'. Ian text Jack, to check the rental car out registration number FSD 390, 'K' came back from Jack.
Ian entered his shower thinking, 'things could get hectic today, better shower while I can'. He showered and changed them made his usual breakfast, slice toast, dry and cup of cold coffee, he thought, 'must change my breakfast menu'.
He walked down to his Saab, smiled, then unlocked the door climbed in, inserted ignition key, the Saab jumped into life, the remote gate opened and he reversed out onto the busy main road, he accelerated and he could hear the turbo roar into life, turbo gauge reading thirty positive pressure, love that sound he thought.
Ian proceeded straight to Ms Smith-Fields address on the foreshore near Sydney Beach Estate, he entered the Estate road pausing at the boom gate, the guards box on the left, he idled the Saab up to the box, big chap twenty stone came out and said 'in a gruff voice' “do you have an appointment and who do wish to see ”? “Yes, Ms Smith-Field”, “please wait Sir”, the guard picked up the phone and called, “Hello Ms Smith-Field, I have a man here at the gate wishing to see you, his name is Ian Glass-Ton”, “send him on up Mr. Gordon”, The boom gate opened and Ian was directed to Number 41 at the top of the road. Ian idled the Saab along the road at walking speed admiring the $3,000,000.000 mansions either side. After a few minutes he reach number 41, the house was massive, three story brick dwelling, sprawling gardens and a drive way that stretched for what seemed miles. He pulled up outside the mansion and the doors opened with Ms Smith-Field adoring the entrance, she nodded at Ian and turned walking back inside, Ian parked the Saab removed the keys and set the alarm. He followed her as she pony walked into the kitchen, well more like a restaurant, she turned and asked if he would like some coffee, Ian nodded 'yes'. She handed him a cup of coffee, he took a sip then said quietly “may I ask you a personal question”? “Go right a head”, “why would you marry a man knowing full well he was heavily involved in major crime”? She turn and said “ he swept me off my feet”, “same thing happened to John Dillinger's girlfriend and look where it got her”. She did not quite get Ian's meaning, but smiled, “he went on to say this is a bad situation, you should have told me who your Ex husband was”, “and if I did, would you have still taken the case”? “Well, more thought would have gone into my decision”, pausing Ian thought, how could he get this thug off his clients back so to speak, “why is it that your Ex husband wants to kill you”? “he thinks he owns me like a possession, I am nobodies possession”, “I see, so what do you think would get him off your back”? “His death”, Ian thought, hmmm straight to the point, “well that's not going to happen is it”? Ms Smith-Field smiled and said “why not”, “because I am not a contract killer”, “well, we are not going to solve my problem are we”? “If we can tie him to an attempt on your life it could see him go to prison for a long time”, “yes, but he is very smart never leaves a trail that leads anywhere”, “leave his trail to me”.
Ian said “good by”, then left and headed back to his office.
When Ian turned twenty one he a survive a horrific car accident which left him a quadriplegic and he was never suppose to recover, During the time of his accident he met a man who was a genius in electronics, he designed a skeleton frame that was married to Ian's, of course this was purely experimental, the operation was performed in a secret location, even Ian did not know where. After the operation and many hours of rehabilitation Ian could walk again and use his arms and upper and lower body. With this addition to his body came extra strength an he was able to move at speed. This episode in Ian's life has been kept a secret.
Back at the office Ian's associates were in a meeting discussing the two cases. He walked into the office and Jack said “ glad you found time in your busy schedule to attend our meeting” and laughed, Ian nodded and then went on to relay the information he obtained from Ms Smith-Field. Well thought Jack “nice to know we are privy to that piece of information”. “Things have changed a little” said Ian, “we need to employ your hacker friend Phil, he plans his attacks on the internet under a pseudo name, he needs to locate and track every move of Mr John Plenty, he will make a fatal mistake then we will have him”, “okay back to work you lot”, “hey Jack have you found out any more about the car thieves”? “Working on it”, “work fast I do not want my Saab stolen”, Jack smiled, “I am on it”.
The weeks passed and John Plenty had tried another three times to kill his Ex wife, Phil's friendly Hacker closing in on Plenty (Alias the killer on the net) was leaving crumbs all over the net and these were adding up. On the fourth week Plenty had planned another attack on his Ex wife but Ian's crew were head of him. He planned to follow his Ex wife down the mountain road from Ms Smith-Field's Country home in the Hills and push her off the road, it would appear an accident.
The police had been notified and were waiting at the place where he was going to ram and force his Ex wife off the road, the trap was set, at one pm Ms Smith-Field left the holiday home in her BMW and proceeded down the mountain road, John Plenty was parked out of sight. Plenty has made the fatal mistake, this time he was going to kill her himself. His Ex wife passed him and he pulled out and followed her, as she rounded the second bend where the road narrowed and it was the closest to the edge he increased his speed and was about to push her square in her back bumper and this would send her car plummeting over the mountain side and to her death, then out of no where came Phil, he hit Plenty's SUV in the left front guard sending him careering into a side road flipping his car, it came to rest fifty feet off the road, the police grabbed him as he alighted from the car and arrested for attempted murder of his Ex wife.
During the months a head his lawyers tried to have the case thrown out of court but the over whelming evidence Ian's team had collected sealed his fate. Plenty was found guilty of attempted murder and sentenced to fifteen years imprisonment with non parole period.
Another case solved and a great pay cheque for Glass-Ton Investigations.
Mean while there had been very little progress on the car theft gang, they appear to be invisible, and the AFP had very little on the subject. Ian called in a favor from his old school buddy that had moved to the USA when he was sixteen. Paul an extremely intelligent young man was studying at ANU when he was recruited into the CIA, of course no one knew of this accept Ian. Ian had kept in touch with Paul and also worked with him in the Middle East on assignment with ASIO years previously.
Ian contacted Paul seeking information on the syndicated of car thieves working throughout the world. Paul told Ian that there were two separate gangs working the Eastern and Western boarders of the world, he inter mated that the gang working Australia were extremely dangerous and to be very careful when dealing with them. He advised Ian where to look directing him to the Dark Net. Even though they were good friends he was a CIA operative who was steeped in secrecy, he did not reveal all the information, he knew Ian was an exceptional investigator and would find all he needed on his own, he just needed a push in the right direction.
Ian contacted their next level Hacker and gave her instruction on what to look for BUT, be very careful these people will not hesitate to kill any one who gets remotely close to them. Hacker knew Ian meant what he said. To find information on the Dark Web you need a contact who will vouch for you. After the introduction from the contact onto the Dark Net the Hacker commenced her search covering her tracks as she progressed. After forty eight hours straight she found her first lead, she backed out of the Dark Net leaving no signs she had ever been there.
The Hacker grabbed a few hours kip time then contacted Ian. Meeting was set at 2100 hrs the next day at a deserted mine site fifteen kilometers south of the city. Ian had never seen her face or knew anything about her, Ian stepped out of his car and stood at what looked like the entrance to an old mine shaft, when suddenly he was over come by gas and fell to the ground. When he finally woke he had no idea where he was. He was laying on an old army cot with a shadowy figure leaning over him in a dimly lite room, she asked if he was okay and apologizing for the gas. Ian knew secrecy was so import in this persons line of work. Ian sat up rubbing the back of his neck, on the table next to him was a glass of cold water which he drank quickly, he regained his composure after the gas had knocked him unconscious. Observing the Hacker prone in front of her screens. There were twenty computer monitors placed on stud walls surrounding the Hacker displaying all manner of information, the area immediately around the hacker was dark for obvious reasons, Ian asked “what have you found?” “The syndicate of car thieves are extremely well organized, no wonder the local plod could not expose them” (AFP or ASIO).
“They worked entirely on the dark net at a level she had never seen before, exploring twenty five layers of miss information, side tracks and dead ends”. Ian said “I understand what you are saying but how does that help me”? “Bare with me Mate and I will show you”, her fingers worked the key board like grease lightening as she flew from place to place on the Dark Net, finally, there it all was, the entire setup of the gang in the Australasian region, Ports they operated out of, Trucking firms, Banks, Personal and pay slips. Some of the high profile names on the screen astounded Ian. He could not believe his eyes, “can we download this information”? “No, it is not like the internet, it is live and fluid, it will move again in 5 4 3 2 1” and it was gone. Hacker said “she knew where it would pop up next in three hours”, “how can we used this to bring them all cashing down”? “I can set up the next feed, and your mates at ASIO can lock on and catch these bastards”, Hacker text her contact in ASIO and told him what she was about to do. In three hours he must be ready or they will loose the edge she has created. Three hour precisely the window opened on the Dark Net as she had predicted and there it all was, the AFP and ASIO struck like grease lightening capturing the entire syndicate.
The Syndicate was shut down and Ian's prize possession was safe for now.
Ian's friend from the CIA had been following Ian's every move, he text Ian, 'job well done mate'. Ian's friend at the AFP text 'how did he achieve such a magnificent take down' Ian replied 'would have to kill you if I told you' and text back 'a smiley face'.
Ian and his crew sat back in the office toasting each other on another precision executed case endings.
The End
This is not the end of Ian Glass-Ton Investigations

Ian said “good by”, then left and headed back to his office.
