Tidal Wave
Born 2007, F, from Michigan, United StatesTidal Wave
For my birthday, I went to my grandma's house. I wasn’t expecting what happened to me...
SURPRISE! Balloons were hung up everywhere. Confetti was in my hair. My whole family was there. My cousin Allison, my grandparents, and my aunts and uncles! As I stepped closer into the room, I saw a Hawaiian dancer picture on the wall. And a frosted watermelon cake!
After the cake, I opened presents. I got a flower lei, seashells necklace, a Hawaii dress, all in a suitcase. “What is this?” I asked. You are missing one.” My mom said, ignoring me. I looked in the side pocket of the suitcase, there were 2 plane tickets. I read it closely. “Maui, Hawaii. 2 seats b2,b3” I knew what was happening. I was going to Hawaii! Speechless, I started to cry and ran to give my mom and family a hug.
~~~~~~~
On the day of the trip, I put on my Hawaiian dress. I also got my favorite doll in a matching outfit. I was so excited. In the airport, I found the most interesting thing EVER! It was ground...That MOVED! I loved it! I just stood on it and rode on the moving ground. When I got to our gate, I asked my mom to go to get ice cream. We left our stuff with one of the flight attendants. In the ice cream place, I got Raspberry Sherbert.
When we got back, It was time to get on the airplane. I sprinted past everyone on the connector. When I got on the plane, I stopped. I looked. I was about to go to Hawaii. My mom helped me on the plane. I ran looking for b2 and b3. When I found them, I saw mine was a window seat. I wiggled into my spot. My mom was putting her luggage into the slot above our seats. I stared out of the window. I watched as our plane was backing away from the airport. I watched as the plane was heading toward the runway.
When the plane was ready to take-off, I squeezed my teddy bear. I put my head in my mom's arms. When we were in the air, I again, looked out the window. I waved to the ground. I knew they wouldn’t see me, But I still waved.
I fell asleep, snuggling my doll and teddy. My mom woke me up when we were over the ocean. I put my face to the window. “Wow!” I said, staring at the ocean. A few dolphins jumped in the water. I turned to my mom. “ Look, Mom! Dolphins!” I said, pointing to the dolphins. She nodded. My mom ordered me orange juice.
After my juice, I again dozed off into a deep sleep. When I woke up, We were landing in Hawaii. It was midnight. We waited for my aunt to pick us up. We had Japanese food while we were waiting.
My aunt met me and my mom at the airport a few minutes after our food. My aunt gave me a flower lei and said “Aloha! Welcome!"
We left the airport and went to my aunt's house. She lived on a large hill. We had the view of Hawaiian mountains. I went to bed on the couch with my doll and teddy. I dreamed of what adventures Hawaii had in store for a little 6-year-old. I also dreamed of what “Aloha” means.
~~~~~~~~~~
The next day, I was the last one awake. I woke up to chicken. Yes! CHICKEN! Anyway, I went outside. Then I saw the best thing ever. They had a hamac! A HAMAC!!!! I lay down in it. “Oh, Hey Avery! Wanna go to the beach?” my mom said. Before she could finish, I yelled, “YESS!”
After I got into my bathing suit, my aunt took me and my mom to her favorite smoothie place. “MMM! Des is yummy!” I said, with my mouth full of a dairy-free cookie. “I am glad you like it,” she said, drinking the last bit of her shake.
After our lovely drinks, we went to the beach. When we got to the beach, I ran through the rows of flowers as if it was made just to welcome me. When I got to the water I stopped. I stared at the lone sea ahead of me. As the waves crashed at my feet, I stepped closer into the longing sea.
I looked back at my mom and aunt. They nodded. I ran into the sea like a crazy person I am. I splashed and played. “Aloha,” a voice said behind me. That word again! WHAT DOES IT MEAN! I thought. “Um, Hello?” I said turning around. “My name is Lilly. What's your name?” Lilly said. “Uh… My name is Zoey.” I squeaked. “Cool! Let’s be friends!” Lilly yelled in my ear.
“OK!” I said, sounding a little more confident. We splashed and played. We choose to dig a hole and make it a pool.
“You’re not from here, Are you?” Lilly said. How does she know I am not Hawaiian? I thought. “No. I am from Michigan, In the main part of America. How did you know?” I said. “The way you dig. You aren’t putting your horsepower into this hole.” Lilly said. Confused, I resumed digging.
“Let's go back in the water,” I said. She agreed and we left to go play in the water. She left. then we got to eat. I was sat down. The water was to my hips. I was trying to collect sand and seashells.
“Zoey! WATCH OUT! A HUGE WAVE!” Someone yelled. I wasn’t fast enough to move. The wave collapsed on me. Everything went black.
I woke up on the beach with 2 lifeguards, My mom, and aunt, Lily, and her mom, and a lot of others surrounding me. They were all shocked. I was covered in seaweed. Everything was a little blurry. The taste of salt water drowned out the pain of a rock that hit my ankle going under. The pain of the sand in my eyes made me close my eyes. I woke up in hospital.
“W-Where A-Am I?” I sputtered. My mom jumped off her seat and ran toward my bed. “Zoey!” She said. “W-What H-Happened?” I asked, still sputtering. My mom told me the story. I was surprised that I was alive!
Everyone on the beach ran into my room. In the crowd, I heard Lilly and my aunt. I mostly heard people say “Your Ok!” And “Oh thank goodness”. I also heard “We thought you weren’t going to make it!”. The doctors ran in and pushed the crowd away. “Ok, OK. Let her rest. Today has been stressful.” One of the doctors proclaimed.
“She will be free to leave tomorrow.” The doctor said when the crowd left. “Thank you.” My mom said. She whispered something in the doctor's ear. The doctor nodded and walked away. The doctor came back with my favorite drink. Pog. I drank it all in 2 seconds.
The next day, We had more Hawaiian fun. We say the end of the road. We also saw an extinct volcano. We went to an aquarium. On my real birthday, we went to a luau. We went on a tour of the mountain and waterfall. On the last day, we went on a whale watching tour.
~~~~~~~
Hawaii was a lot of fun. We left after a week in Hawaii. On the way home, Back to Michigan, I had my favorite drink. I fell asleep half way through the plane ride. I dreamed about all the things I did in Hawaii. The friends I met, the food I had, The adventures I had, and…. What “Aloha” means.
01/12/2019Aloha Avery,
Congratulations on getting Story Star of the Week! Way to go! I used to live in Hawaii and my daughter went to kindergarten there too. I had a similar experience with a wave - I didn't have to go to the Hospital like you did, but the Life Guards had to come get me with a Jet Ski! I got sucked out from the Bay and couldn't see land. Luckily, those guys were watching out for me.
And we all still drink Pog, love Shave Ice, and the beach!
Smiles, Kevin
