The Talking Dog
Born 2008, M, from Portland,Oregon, United StatesThe cornfields were swaying in the wind and my hair bounced as I ran back home. My dog barked as I ran past him as if I was running a race. “Yodel,” I hollered at my Golden Retriever. “Go fetch” as I threw a Cherry Blossom twig over his head. Yodel ran like lightning to catch the twig in midair. He ran back wagging his tail and looking like a winner. I reached for the twig but Yodel pulled back. He whined and whimpered.
He started limping so I crouched down to examine his front, left paw. I couldn’t believe my eyes. There was a large, white sharp tooth that looked like a dinosaur claw. “Oh my goodness! Are you okay? You poor baby,” I said sadly. I took him to my mother and when I saw my mother’s face, I knew she felt the same way as I did. We took him to the vet and the vet told us to leave the room.
“I am not moving!” I shouted.
“Honey, we have to,” my mother told me, but I still could see that she didn’t want to leave too.
“do you want to see the blood, Liam?”
“No, but I still want to stay!” I was so mad because my mother wasn’t listening to me.
“Honey please we have to-” my mother said and stopped. “wait, can we stay in the front office?”
“Of course you can” replied the vet who was getting very impatient, “May I get this dog the treatment it needs?”
“Of course,” I answered. We walked toward the front office and heard thousands of whines and barks. I looked around and saw that this office was more like a zoo. I woke up with a start.
“Wa-wa-what happened, where am I?”
“Liam, do you know where is my giant shark tooth?” my little sister said.
“What-what do you mean?” I asked in confusion, “what shark tooth?”
“My shark tooth, duh,” my little sister teased, “don’t you know? When I found the shark tooth on the beach near where grandma and grandpa live?”
“Ooh- Ahh where is Yodel, is he okay?!” I shouted remembering my nightmare. My little sister stared.
“Are you okay, how many fingers am I holding up,” my little sister was now being serious.
“What do you think, am I blind?” I asked, so annoyed, “you're holding two.”
“He’s downstairs playing with his chew toy,” my little sister told me, still worried. I ran downstairs as quick as my feet could take me. When I got downstairs, I saw my little sister was right. Yodel was on the ground playing with his chew toy. Just then, Yodel saw me coming and he barked. At first my brain was too excited to process all the noises. Then it hit me. I don’t know what happened but Yodel was speaking in fluent English. “Hi Liam, how are you?” Yodel asked.
“I-I am g-good?” I answered surprised and confused. I couldn’t believe what I heard from Yodel.

11/08/2018Great story for kids. I shall read it to my grandchildren. As Jd said you could have extended the story a bit along the lines of your dog talking.
Well done.
Maybe you can write a part 2

11/08/2018I enjoyed this story, Duncan, but I really wanted the idea of the talking dog to be further developed. The story is titled, The Talking Dog, and yet you only briefly mention it at the very end. That made it seem like the story was cut off and the rest of it was missing. At least, I really wanted to read more... : )
