The Tale Of Rainbow Roses
Born 2007, F, from Portland OR, United StatesOnce upon a time, a father named Ryan and his son Tommy moved into a little cottage by the countryside. An old farmer who lived 1 mile away from their home gave them a bag of seeds. “Plant these seeds in the dirt,” the farmer said. “Water them everyday and give them plenty of sunlight. After a year of nurturing, the seeds will bloom into breathtaking roses. But if you give them love, they will bloom even prettier.” The farmer handed the seeds to Ryan and departed.
Ryan and Tommy each took a handful of seeds and decided to plant some roses each. But they had different plans for them: Ryan wanted to sell his roses for money. But Tommy wanted to give his roses to his grandmother as a gift. Despite their different attitudes, Ryan and Tommy both were determined to plant the most gorgeous roses ever.
Ryan and Tommy took care of their roses very differently. Ryan took care of the roses diligently, but he often complained about the hard work and standing in front of the scorching sun. He would moan as he carried water from the well and yelp whenever his back became sore. He thought of planting the roses as a job; he was doing it just for the money.
Tommy had done his work differently. He watered the roses carefully and spent the day singing happy songs to the roses and reading to them. At night, he insisted on walking out to the chilly garden to sing a lullaby to his roses. Tommy thought of planting the roses as a hobby and a pleasure, unlike his father.
After a year of tending and gardening, Tommy found his roses one day to be a radiant, rainbow color. The roses looked very healthy and stood proudly under the sun. Tommy was so thrilled, he invited the farmer that gave his father the seeds to come check out his roses. “You did a wonderful job, young boy,” the farmer remarked with a smile. “I’ve never seen roses bloom so big!”
As the farmer lavished the jubilant young boy, he found another bush of roses. “Your father must have planted this,” the farmer said, heading over to check out the rose bush. As he observed the roses, his smile faded. Ryan’s roses were colorless. They had a pale, white color, and their leaves looked as if they dried up. “Ooh...Your father must’ve planted the roses without the key ingredient.”
What key ingredient? Tommy thought. Dad watered the roses and gave them sunlight!
The farmer chuckled at the sight of Tommy’s perplexed face. “The key ingredient is love. If you took care of the flowers and showed them that you cared about them with all your heart, they will turn into a dazzling color of rainbow. But if you didn’t truly care about them, they will turn into a color of pale white. This species of roses is very special and they are often referred to as “Rainbow Roses.”
Tommy nodded his head. He finally understood why his father’s roses were so colorless. He often saw his father complaining about all the hard work. He said to himself that he would be selling the roses to get money. Dad only cared for the roses for the profit! Tommy realized. He didn’t truly care for them!
Tommy ran into the cottage to talk to his father. He saw Ryan reading a book titled, Ways To Bargain And Profit.
“Father! I know why your roses are so pale!” Tommy shouted out to his father.
“They’re not pale! My roses have a wonderful, white color!” Ryan replied, still focused on his book.
“No! They look like they’re sick! Mine are rainbow-colored, you know!”
Ryan peered up from his book. “They… are?”
“Yep,” Tommy said.
Ryan ran up to the window and saw the pale, white roses and the shimmering, rainbow roses. “How do I make them rainbow-colored?” Ryan asked.
“You just need love,” Tommy replied. “You’re taking care of the roses just for the money. That’s why they’re pale. But they’ll grow if you actually care about them!”
Ryan stood up. “I’ll stop complaining. But only for the color!”
Tommy smiled. “That’s a better attitude.”
For the next few days, Ryan stopped whining and moaning while working. He worked hard trying to give the roses a rainbow color. But they stayed pale and white. Ryan started to lose his patience. After a month of work, he sat on the sofa, feeling frustrated.
Tommy saw his father covering his face with his hands. “How come my work didn’t pay off at all?” he moaned. “I took care of it and everything!”
Tommy felt bad for his father. Even if Ryan was simply taking care of the roses just for the money, he still worked really hard for the roses to bloom. Then, Tommy knew just what he should do. He cut off the rainbow roses and put them in a decorated vase. He brought the vase of roses over to his father.
“Here,” Tommy said to Ryan. “You won’t have to work hard for rainbow roses anymore.”
Ryan gently took the vase. He started to smile brightly. “Thanks,” he said. “I appreciate your gift. But weren’t you going to give your flowers to your grandma?”
Tommy smiled. “Grandma can wait. In the meantime, why don’t we work together and try to make your roses turn into a rainbow color?”
“Yes. We should, for your Grandma,” Ryan replied. “I won’t sell any of the roses off.”
Tommy tugged his father’s arm. “Then let’s get working!”
Ryan walked off the sofa and walked into the garden, along with his son. “Yes,” he said. “We should start working.”

07/31/2018This story is so filled with adorableness and a son teaching his father, not the other way around. The father is more like today’s careless people, who do things only for the money. And then the son is like a rainbow flower himself, bringing joy to the people around him to get them to blossom! This story is so beautiful. The secret ingredient is, in fact, love. Five stars!
