The Winner
Born 1948, M, from Kent - garden of England, United KingdomThe Winner
It was the winning scratch card, and I had bought it on a whim.
I am not a natural gambler, but when I received a brand new issue one pound coin, as the change when I shopped for groceries, I bought a bright yellow lottery scratch card. It promised, in very garish letters on the front, winnings of two hundred thousand pounds for a complete line of four treasure chests. I had been prompted in its purchase by the customer before me, who had just cashed in a winning card for the princely sum of three pounds, and was seemingly overjoyed at the prospect of making two pounds on an investment of one.
Jim the grocer had smiled at me as he handed the card over, "Hope it is your lucky day today" he laughed, as he slammed the drawer of the till back in. I nodded my thanks and left the shop, my thumbnail busy as it scratched off the silver foil to reveal the first chest. As I crossed the road to my car, another chest appeared, followed by a third, "oh yeah" I thought "the next one is going to be the dud", and I started to crumple the card, my eye now fixed on the overflowing litter bin next to a lamp post. But curiosity got the better of me, and I continued to scratch at the last panel. Amazingly the final treasure chest was revealed, and in my sudden joy, I spun around to go straight back to the shop.
The very last thing I heard was a squeal of brakes and a shout.
And now I find myself vaguely veiwing the scene from afar, as my soul drifts away, and also sincerly hoping that a deserving person will find the card and claim the big prize, on their lucky day.

06/06/2018Wonderfully woven short story. I read it to my brother over the phone (he buys lottery tickets, I don't, you know, because I took statistics a long time ago. LOL ). My brother laughed at the ending and said: "That would be my luck too!" And just like your fictional character, my brother hoped the card was found by someone deserving of a "lucky day." Smiles, Kevin
