Hercules and Bubblegum find Costumes in the Attic
Born 1947, M, from Zurich, SwitzerlandJenny and Jerry and their parents were again visiting the hotel in the mountains. Jenny and Jerry spent a lot of their time sitting at the sofa in the lounge where the two toy bears Hercules and Bubblegum spent most of their time. After a few days of rainy cold weather, Jenny and Jerry were becoming a little bit bored, despite the enthralling company of Hercules and Bubblegum. Jenny and Jerry had got to the point of being sure that the bears winked at them and talked to them. And why not? Because among most children visitors the toy bears had the reputation of being very entertaining and great heroes!
Jenny and Jerry had dozed off and dreamt that Hercules and Bubblegum had taken them up several flights of stairs into the far reaches of the attics. It was comfortable under the roof, with the spaced dormer windows and slight pleasant musty smell of old herbs and dried flowers. The rain drummed on the roof enhancing the comfort and making Jenny and Jerry want to fall asleep. ‘What? Fall asleep’, thought Jenny and Jerry, ‘We were already dozing downstairs’! Jenny and Jerry were surprised to find Hercules and Bubblegum also in the attic for they never moved from their sofa by the lounge window, unless they were carried by wandering children. It certainly looked as if Hercules and Bubblegum had shown them the way!
In front of Jenny and Jerry there were several large hampers made of woven canes. The type of hampers used for luggage or storage in large old houses of the last century. Jenny and Jerry opened two hampers and were totally surprised to find decorative costumes for children from the last century. Jenny dressed as a farm girl, and Jerry dressed as a horse wagon driver. Then Jenny dressed as the daughter of the manor, and Jerry as the young lord. Strangely enough they could not find their own normal clothes of today. It was getting late and in the distance they could hear the bells for teatime. Jenny and Jerry did not want to miss their favorite cake, so they thought, ‘We will just have to go downstairs in these costumes. Maybe no one will notice!’
So the young lady and young lord of the manor descended the wide wooden staircase down into the entrance lounge of the hotel. There was a running and a bustling of costumed people carrying this and that. The people were shouting all sorts of interesting sounding things, but in a language that Jenny and Jerry could not understand. Well it was actually their language but with a lot of old fashioned words mixed in! It looked as if the whole hotel and the guests had traveled back some 200 years in time! Strangely enough Hercules and Bubblegum were still sitting on their sofa, but looking a lot cleaner and a lot younger!
Jenny and Jerry were offered cakes, but unusual cakes, and tea in ancient cups poured from an ancient teapot. The teapot was blue and white painted porcelain with characters dressed like themselves on the outside. All of the activity seemed to be centered around Jenny and Jerry who really were treated as the young lady and young lord of the manor. They were continually asked whether the cakes were to their liking, or whether they would not prefer the pink kind of cakes preferred by Marie Antoinette – whoever she was?
There was music played and groups performed dances all for their benefit. It was truly a wonderful afternoon. ‘A special way to pass a rainy afternoon‘, thought Jenny and Jerry. After too many cakes and wonderfully soothing tea, Jenny and Jerry dozed off to sleep again. Strangely enough they both dreamt exactly the same dream, which happened quite often when they were sitting next to the famous toy bears. Hercules and Bubblegum took them back up to the attic where they found their own normal clothes inside one of the hampers. Jenny and Jerry changed back into their clothes and packed away the costumes into the hampers. Then the bears took the children back down the large wooden staircase once again and they all sat on the famous window seat.
Jenny and Jerry woke with a start in the window seat of the big hotel lounge, as the tea bells rang. They were both very dazed and rubbed their eyes while they gazed at the two toy bears sitting next to them. They swore that both Hercules and Bubblegum winked their button-type eyes, but how?
“Oh you two have slept through all of the fun this afternoon’, said their mother to them.
“ Oh, Yes”, continued their father, “They shot a costume commercial down here this afternoon. There was a young brother and sister lord and lady who were the main characters. Strangely enough they looked a lot like you. But you two were sleeping with your friends the toy bears!”
Jenny and Jerry and Hercules and Bubblegum exchanged winking eyes for a good few moments after that.
“Great”, said Jenny, “Can we please have pink cakes like Marie Antoinette?”
Jerry laughed, the parents looked dumbfounded, and it certainly looked as though Hercules and Bubblegum were also rolling around laughing on the window seat!
