Little Red Riding Hood but the roles are reversed
Born 2003, F, from Victoria, AustraliaLittle wolf awoke to the gentle nudge of paw and when she looked up and saw the worry in her mother’s eyes she knew something was wrong. Slowly she got up and groomed her fur then turned to her mother who walked over to the empty space that was supposed to be where her grandmother was.
“She didn’t return last night.” Her mother told her. “We will have to go out and find her.”
When Little Wolf heard this she walked over to the corner of the den and picked up a red basket and put food in it for the journey ahead.
When they got outside Little Wolf decided to go down the path of needles while her mother went down the path of sticks. They both knew that her grandma wouldn’t have strayed from the path so they stuck to it in hope of finding her.
Little wolf called out her grandmothers name until the sun was high in the sky and just when she was going to turn around and go back she saw a silhouette of a man standing in the shadows of the trees.
“What is a young wolf like you doing on the path of needles? You know it is the most dangerous part of the forest.” The man stepped forward and it was then that Little Wolf noticed his eyes, the middle was blue which faded into bright green and his scent was unmistakably human.
“I am looking for my grandma, she did not return home last night.” Little wolf had the biting urge to run away from this man but she stayed despite her instincts.
“It would be a shame not to find her wouldn’t it, and may I ask… what is in that lovely red basket of yours?” The man knelt down so that he could look into Little Wolfs eyes.
“Food, I brought it just in case I find grandma and she needs to eat.” Little Wolf replied.
“I can tell that you’re a good wolf. Well I must be on my way, and I hope you find your grandmother very soon.” And with that the man disappeared once again into the shadows.
The man had come across Little Wolfs grandmother earlier on that morning; her leg was stuck under a tree that had fallen and she was easy prey, so he killed her and took her skin as a trophy. But after seeing the perfect fur on Little Wolf he knew that his hunting day was not over, so he brought out the skin of her grandmother and climbed into it so that apart from his eyes he looked identical to that of Granny Wolf.
Placing himself in a spot that he knew Little Wolf would find him and hiding a knife nearby, he made it look like he had hurt himself and waited for her to arrive.
It wasn’t long before Little Wolf saw her grandmother lying on the side of the road; she had obviously broken her leg because looked as though it had been crushed.
“Grandma! Let me help you up!” Little Wolf tried to help her grandmother up but none of her attempts were working. “How did you hurt yourself so badly?”
“I tripped and fell, sweetie could you come closer so I can get myself up”
It was at that moment Little Wolf knew something was up, there was no way her grandmother did that much damage to her leg by just tripping over. Then she noticed that her grandmother’s eyes were different.
“Grandma… Why are your eyes like that of the human I saw earlier?”
“My eyes have always been this way silly wolf.” The man inside Granny Wolf’s skin stayed calm.
“Grandma… Why is your voice that of the human I saw earlier?”
“I’m lying in a funny angle,” It was now that panic started to prick the man heart.
Little Wolf sniffed the air;
“Grandma… Why do I smell the scent of a human?”
“I saw one walk past earlier on, maybe his scent still remains.”
Little Wolf knew something wasn’t right so she lunged and bit her grandmother and to her surprise it was not the blood of a wolf that came from the wound but the blood of a human.
“You aren’t my grandmother are you?” Little wolf was confused and scared. How could her grandmother possibly have the blood of a human when she was a wolf?
“Stupid wolf! What do you think you’ve done!?” The man screamed in pain from the bite. Then he lunged at her, revealing a knife that he had hidden.
Little wolf tore at the skin of her grandmother until the man underneath could be seen. She kept on fighting but the man was too big and too quick and she was almost killed every time he swung the knife in her direction.
Little wolf took one final bite of the man’s arm, but this time it was enough to make him drop the knife, quickly she knocked it out of his reach and threw herself at him knocking him over and just when she was about to do the final bite she stopped.
He was already hurt enough so that he could not follow her, did she really want to become a murder just like him. Little wolf gathered up her red basket and walked over to the shreds of her grandmother left on the ground.
“You’re a monster, first you kill my grandmother and then you come after me.” Little Wolf turned to face the man. “You’re a vile being and you deserve to be punished, but I don’t want to become a murderer.”
The man lay on the ground, defeated.
Little wolf took one last look at him turned around and left.
