Christmas Magic
Born 1947, M, from Oceanside, United StatesChristmas Magic
Every Christmas Eve I return to the children’s hospital where my daughter was once treated and help hand out presents and read stories to some of the sick children. But last Christmas, one of the children asked me the one question many grownups fear the most: how does Santa Clause do everything he does and all in one night? After asking around, I found out.
It seems, a long time ago, there was an angel named Bell, who became concerned when she noticed that a lot of the world’s children were not very happy around Christmas time. That’s because they didn’t have anything to be happy about. Their parents were very, very poor, and even though Christmas was about celebrating the birth of Christ, these children didn’t have much with which to celebrate.
Bell decided she wanted to do something for the children—something that would make them feel, at least, some small amount of happiness. So, after looking all over, she found a very old, very fat carpenter who had a great white beard and bright rosy cheeks. The carpenter lived on the edge of a small village way up north. She decided she would have him make toys for the children of the world. This was way before they had plastic and/or electronic toys.
Coming to him in a dream, she told him her plan. “But that’s a lot of children,” the man, named Nicholas, said to the angel.
“I know,” she replied smiling, but I will help you. I will give you magic with which to make the toys. Then you will deliver them to all the children of the world.”
“But how will I do that?” asked Nicholas.
“You have a sleigh you use to carry wood, don’t you?” Nicholas nodded. “I will turn it into a magic sleigh that will allow you to carry all the toys you make.”
“But who will pull the sleigh?” asked Nicholas.
Bell said to him, “There are reindeer living outside your village, aren’t there?” Once again, Nicholas nodded. “I will give them the ability to fly.”
So Nicholas began making toys the very next morning. Soon, he had hundreds of thousands of toys. If you’re wondering, the sleigh didn’t have to carry all the toys at once. As soon as his bag of toys would start to run low, Nicholas noticed it would fill up again.
But now, you’re wondering how did he deliver all the toys in one night? Once again, it was because of magic. He could slow down time so that all the toys would get to their destination way before the sun came up in the morning.
Ah! But if he was so fat, you’re wondering, how could he fit down all those chimneys? Simple! The magic allowed him to shrink down to the size of a thumb. And if there was no chimney in the house, Nicholas just floated through the wall like a spirit.
Eventually, there were so many children that Nicholas decided he needed help. That’s when the angel created elves to help him make the toys. At this point, his workshop became so crowded with toys, he had to move it further north, which eventually became known as the North Pole and Nicholas became known as Santa Clause.
I know some of you don’t believe in magic or Santa Clause, but then explain to me this. How did all the toys, this year, appear at the bedsides of all the children in the hospital, if no one saw them being delivered? Once again, I say to you magic. If you don’t believe me, just ask Santa.
