Hercules and Bubblegum Rescue the Sheep
Born 1947, M, from Zurich, SwitzerlandHercules and Bubblegum are bears.
They look like toy bears and certainly behave that way at times.
Most of the time they are still and everyone assumes that they are just Teddy Bears.
They live in a country hotel in the hills.
From the hotel window one can see into the fields or into the river, and watch the waterfall tumble down from the cliff above.
Hercules and Bubblegum normally live in the main hotel lounge. They are usually propped up cuddling each other in a window seat. The window seat facing the hill with the sheep seems to be their favorite place.
Hercules and Bubblegum were named by children who had read adventure books. Hercules name is heroic, but the children could not remember Bubblegum's heroic name. Luckily there was a paper wrapper stuck onto his back.
One afternoon when all others were taking a nap, Hercules nudged Bubblegum to look out of the window. "Look the sheep are caught in the barbed wire fence. They will hurt themselves if they cannot get free!" whispered Bubblegum.
"There is no need to whisper," said Hercules to Bubblegum. "Everybody's asleep right now and no one is paying attention to us."
"Oh yes," shouted Bubblegum, "even the sheep dogs are asleep, and they cannot see the poor trapped sheep."
"We must do something immediately," said Hercules, "It is time for another one of our heroic missions! Let's go straight down the back stairs and out through the delivery entrance," suggested Bubblegum.
Down the stairs they went. At such speed they actually rolled. Being cuddly bears they did not hurt themselves. Luckily the door was unlocked and by standing on Bubblegum’s shoulders Hercules could easily open the door.
They crossed the river like real bears, but not pausing to look for jumping fish. They scuttled up the grassy hillside to where the sheep were trapped in the barbed wire fence. They passed the sleeping dogs and remembered the saying about "Let sleeping dogs lie."
If the dogs awoke they would not understand the difference between two small bears on a rescue mission, and supposed children's toys crossing the river and running up the grassy slope.
Luckily Hercules had found some wire cutters near the cellar door and had been thoughtful enough to put them into Bubblegum's back pack. Hercules was very quick in using the wire cutters to free the sheep. Bubblegum quickly reminded the freed sheep about the sleeping dogs. The sheep were all very grateful and responded quickly to not bleating their thanks all about the place.
And so it was, another mission by our favorite bears. Successful, undertaken quietly, and without the usual fuss made by most humans when they have done anything out of the ordinary.
Hercules and Bubblegum went back up the staircase and had just settled into their window seat as the household and guests were all waking up from their afternoon nap. The bears sat very quietly and watched the world pass slowly by.
Out in the field the shepherd could not understand how the wire fence was all cut up and covered with sheep wool. Also the wakened sheep dogs could not understand why the sheep were waving at two toy bears in the hotel window!
