Adam wants to go toy shopping
Born 1988, F, from New York, United StatesAdam wants to go toy shopping
Two days ago, Adam asked his mom to take him toy shopping. His mom, Amanda had just recovered from a terrible cold. It is clearly spring, and the pollens in the city made everyone sick. Adam tugged at his mom continuously until she gave in sharply.
“Ok, Adam. We will go toy shopping only if you make a promise to me.”
“What is it, mom?”
“Promise me that before you go to bed every day, you will clean up your playroom and read a book.”
Adam liked neither of these options. His mom was not insinuating that he should pick between cleaning up his toys and reading a book. She apparently wanted him to do both. Adam was quite rational for a 5-year-old. He knew he was a smart kid. Dad always said that to him as he let him into the school premises each school day. Adam did excellent in his math and reading in school. So there was no need to read at home, he thought to himself. He tried to reason his way out of reading a book and persuaded his mom that the best he could do was clean his playroom each day.
“Mom, you know my teacher says I am one of the best in reading in my classroom. So, how about I read even better at school, then clean up at home” he said vocalizing the many reasoning voices in his head with his eyes fixed intently on his mom’s eyes.
Amanda was putting clean laundry away. She smiled at him. This little boy was her child, she thought to herself. She was impressed with him trying to reason his way out of this proposition.
She shook her head at him, squatted to face him directly and said “Baby, there’s no way out for you here. You choose cleaning up and reading a book, or there will be no shopping”.
Adam looked downcast with his head thrown down to his chest. He turned around and headed for stairs and to his room.
Adam laid on his green-colored bed and gazed at the ceiling. It was getting dark, and he wasn’t sure about taking his mom’s offer.
There was a knock on his door. He turned around as the door opened.
“Hi dad” He greeted.
“Hey, buddy. What’s going on?” His father asked with a tone suggesting he knows what is happening. Adam went ahead to narrate his predicament.
“I just want a toy, Dad. Just one.” He explained tearfully to his dad whose face seemed engrossed with grave concern. “Or two” Adam added quickly to his last statement as he thought about the impossibility of picking only one toy in a store filled with thousands of toys.
“Little man, you know your mama loves you so much. She would buy you anything that she can for you. She just wants you to be responsible with the toys you have here. You have to learn to take care of things put in your care. Do you understand me? He asked pulling his son’s chin up towards him. Adam nodded with a weak smile. “Your mom needs to see that you can take proper care of these little things, that way, she can trust you with more things.” So I can help you out here boy.” Adam jerked with excitement and asked, “How could you dad?”
“Well, we can read the books together every night, after you have cleaned up your playroom. Do we have a deal?” Adam said “Yes!”
“Good!” His dad responded standing up from the bed and walking towards the door. “Adam, you better start now. Clean up your play room while I change my clothes. I’ll be back to read with you”.
Adam jumped off his bed and headed to his playroom. He liked the look of toys kept in a clean manner, but did not like the process it took to get them cleaned up. He ran back to his room to find his dad waiting for him. They read a book together. Adam enjoyed reading. It made him think and build his imaginations. He learned new words and saw that he was doing better in reading.
In one week Adam’s mom had noticed a change in her son’s behavior. He looked forward to reading each night with dad. He was learning to take responsibility for things put in his care. He would pick up toys and pencils that were out of place.
“Adam, put on your shoes, we are going to the toy store right away” Amanda called out to him out of nowhere. Adam, filled with joy and excitement grabbed his shoes in his hands, pulled open the door in his room and ran downstairs. Dad and mom were in the living room waiting for him. They laughed out loud as they say him running down with his shoes pressed onto his chest making and a face glowing with big smiles. He got to the last step, jumped down and panted for a while. He wore his shoes and went off with his parents to go toy shopping.
