“Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you.” We all sang. The room was filled with joy while we sang happy birthday to grandma. She blew out the candles and we started to eat the cake. I was full, so I took out my phone. My mom said, “James! Put your phone away right now!” Now it was time to open presents. There was only one present and it was in a small package. She opened the present and almost had a heart attack from how much she loved it. Everyone acted curious to know what it was even though they bought it.
She took the piece of paper out of the box that said, “We’re going to Australia.” My Dad said we leave tomorrow on a private jet. Grandma’s face glowed with excitement.
“How did you guys get enough money for all of this?” she asked.
“My dad got a raise for his job.”
Next thing I knew I was getting on the jet with the pilot greeting us. I looked the pilot up online and one time when he was flying a plane he went into a tornado and managed to keep the plane from falling.
In the back of the jet was a whole kitchen area and surprisingly clean bathroom. The chairs were made of leather painted yellow and the floor was a blue carpet. The pilot halfway into the flight said that there will be no turbulence throughout the rest of the ride. My sister Lily fell asleep and rested on my shoulder. I tried to ignore it by looking out the window.
I heard a cracking noise as the wing of the jet started to come off. My heart started to beat faster than a race car going around a track. My stomach drops. I scream and an alarm goes off. I can hear the pilot panicking from the control room. Just as I think it can't get any worse the gas tank goes to empty. I look around for a parachute but there was nothing. I ran to the pilot's room but the door was locked. I looked under the chairs and all over in the kitchen. Nothing. The part of the jet that had our luggage fell apart. The pilot got knocked unconscious. Then I do.
I wake up on a beach with my family surrounding me. I see the jet sinking in the water. “What happened?” I asked.
“The jet sank into the water. We were all able to escape but we couldn’t get the pilot.” I get up feeling a little dizzy. My cousin Justin came running out of the forest screaming in terror.
“Did you find any mint for James?” my dad asked. “No but I did find something.”
He ran back into the forest advising all of us to follow him. He showed us something unbelievable. Dodo birds. Dodo birds that have existed for millions and billions of years. One walked up to us and we all took a step back.
“Hello. My name is Phill and you are?” The Dodo bird asked. It was an ugly bird with a big beak. Its small eyes looked like they were part of that big beak. It was short and it had small wings. The small round tail looked like a donut. We all ran back to the beach at full speed from the fear.
I asked if what we just saw actually happened. The bird came running out from the woods saying “Why did you run away? We just met.” Nobody said anything. We all just stood there. “Welcome to Dodo Island. On this island all the Dodo birds that people thought all died are really here on this island.” Lily thought that this was so cool. She thought that they were seeing something nobody else saw before. But when she looked around she noticed human bones getting washed up on the beach.
“You see” said Phill “We all came to this island because of the other predators on main land. But our choice to come here was a huge mistake. There is a force field that won't let us out but things can come in. The worst of it are the Ameeli monsters. They have razor sharp teeth and they make no noise. We never know when they will strike. All we realized was that they strike two times a day.” Surprisingly I started to think that this whole situation was pretty cool along with my sister.
“A volcano erupted years ago but never since so be careful about that. Follow me” Phill said.
On the way I started to ask him where we were going. He would not answer. I thought to myself that Phill and I would become friends. He brought us to a nest. Then another one, and another one, another one. In each had its own Dodo bird family. This doesn't look like a stupid bird at all, why did people think this. “How do scientists have fossils of Dodo birds if all of you are here.”
“That was when we were still on mainland.”
My uncle Rob went farther into the woods to find something to build a shelter with. He found an old cloth, branches and a sharp stick. The first thing he did was use the sharp stick to make more sharp sticks. By the end we had a decent sized tent. It wasn’t as hard as someone would think. “Looks like all that camping paid off.” I went off on my own to go find some food. My sister went to the shallow water to look for fish. Rob went to see if he can sneak some Dodo bird eggs.
As I got deeper into the woods I started to hear sounds. Strange sounds. A crackling sound. That was when I noticed the wild fire straight ahead of me. I ran back to the tent to warn everyone. My dad comes back with Phill yelling at him and Lily comes back with Ameeli monsters lined up on the beach. She shows us the huge scratch on her arm that one of the Ameeli monsters made. “You have to be more careful than that if you want to survive on this island.”
Grandma was laying down on the floor of the tent. She looked very ill. She was wrapped in leaves. She was struggling to keep herself awake when Phill came in the tent along with everyone else. “Oh no” he said. “I thought this wouldn't happen so fast.” “What would happen so fast” she asked.“The Elvera Virus. It can kill you in an instant. We Dodo birds have been working hard to make a cure for the next people who come to this island”. “How are you still…” Phill cut me off. “Dodo birds are immune”. “Well what about…”. Phill cut me off… again. “Ameeli Monsters too. Everything on this island has evolved to be immune.” Grandma got more ill. She started screaming. I ran away. I couldn't stand the fact that grandma was so ill.
I planed to stay out for the night. I went to where all the Dodo birds are. I went to the first one I saw. “Can you be my guide for the night”. “Sure”. His name was Fernando. He was so nice. he asked me where I wanted to camp out. I didn't care as long as it was not close to the tent. We found a nice big rock with some space underneath. It was a ten minute walk to the rock. Not too far and not too close to the tent. I wondered what was happening to grandma. Is she okay? Did Phill fix her? Did she die? I tried to keep my mind off it but I just couldn’t.
I found some high grass and I made a pillow out of it. I used giant leaves as a blanket. “So why did you run away from your family?" Fernando asked. “My grandma got the elvera virus. I couldn't watch her like that. It hurt too much”. The cave looked nice. I thought that this could be a good place to come back when I need alone time.
I walk back to the tent with the morning sun beaming on me. Passing through the high and low trees I think about grandma. Is she alright? Did she die? What would I do without her? I get back to the tent and I see a hole in the far distance. I see them putting dirt back into the hole and I didn’t see grandma participating.
I ran to the tent and I don’t see her. I asked Lily why she was building a hole. “Where were you?” “Doesn’t matter. Where's grandma?” “She’s in a better place now.” I ran back to the cave I was in with Fernando. The light shined straight into it. I stayed there for the night.
I wake up to a cloudy morning and head back to the tent. I thought I was going to the tent but I came back to a tree house. I see grandma sitting on a chair outside of it. “Lily said you were dead.” ”Phill gave me the cure just in time.” “But she said that you were in a better place” “Yea, I was on the beach. It is much nicer than the forest.”
I went back to the cave and went all the way to the back. When I saw a rock, I realized it could be used to make fire. I tried to take the rock. It won't come off the ground because a string was attached to it. Behind me a staircase goes down to a hidden room. I walked down the stairs into a room with lots of boxes. I open one and it was empty. I opened another and it led down to another hidden room. This room had a bunch of gadgets. I flip a switch and I hear a loud noise like something coming down. As I turn around, I see this shadowy figure staring at me. I take a closer look and it did not look like a human. I went back up to the other room and it was gone in an instant. The room started to freak me out so I left.
I look up and the force field is gone. I heard rumbling noise come out of nowhere and lava starts to flow out of the volcano. I reach into my pocket and pull out my phone. It had 1 bar. It was running low fast. I make a mark on the map of where I am and the phone turns off. I ran back to the tree house. “Build a raft! Build a raft! The force field is gone and the volcano is erupting!” My dad got right to work. The raft was finished in minutes. I asked Phill to hop on. We all hopped onto the raft. We started paddling getting ready for the long journey ahead.
