Pearl Nutkevitch Feeds the Ducks
Born 1966, F, from Hamilton, CanadaPearl. Nutkevitch Feeds the Ducks

The summer I was seven years old in Montreal I caught the chicken pox. My three year old brother caught the chicken pox as well. Chicken pox is highly contagious in those days there was no vaccine. Our friends in the neighbourhood were told to stay away from us. This would not help them because before the development of the vaccine it was normal for children to catch chicken pox.
One of the neighbours, Nathan Nutkevitch, took a bunch of of children, including his four grandchildren, to get them away from my brother and me to Beaver Lake in Montreal. Beaver Lake has a duck pond which is filled with ducks swimming around.
Nathan’s two year old granddaughter Pearl Nutkevitch decided to feed the ducks. Pearl found bread crumbs that you could buy at a nearby stand. She tossed the bread crumbs into the duck pond. When the ducks did not come to eat the bread crumbs, Pearl decided to take the bread crumbs to the ducks. To accomplish this, Pearl, with her clothes on jumped into the pond. The water level was taller than her. She almost drowned. Grandfather Nathan, to save her, leaped into the duck pond after her, with his clothes on. Both grandfather and granddaughter ended up soaking wet. They did not have a change of clothing. Luckily it was a hot summer day. Onlookers at Beaver Lake had a good laugh.
With wet clothes, Nathan and Pearl, along with the other children, drove home. They were dirty from the dirty lake and had to be washed right away. Nathan and Pearl had to take baths right away. The story was all over the neighbourhood thanks to Nathan’s daughter-in-law and Pearl’s mother Norma.
