A day when the cost of love, was life
Born 1980, F, from Bladensburg, United StatesKelvin swallowed hard, as he stares at the ring in his hand, the diamond on the ring is just a little bit smaller than a black eye pea. He sure does hope Katie likes it. This is not the ring he had envisioned to propose to her with, but it was the best his money could buy. He stares at himself in the mirror with disgust, and muttered the word “Coward”, at his reflection. Right now he wishes the only reason he is hiding cowardly in the men’s bathroom of a five-star restaurant was just because of the fear of her not accepting the cheap diamond ring, if that was the case, it would have been better because then he can save some more and buy her a better one. But that’s not the case, its more complicated than that. And he knows she will accept any ring from him, he knows she is not out for his money. He laughed at the thought, making a sound that sounded more like a cry than a laugh. Katie already knows he doesn’t have much. And most importantly she is an independent lady. He took a deep breath and wishes he can do without her and just forget the proposal, but he knows he can’t, because a second without her is like going an hour without breath. He has to tell her.
He felt his heart raising hard in his chest, and his hands shaking uncontrollably, trying so hard to keep the ring from falling. Should he tell her before he proposes? Or should he just go ahead and ask her to marry him without letting her know, after all what she doesn't know won’t hurt her. He shook his head, and the sweat making its way from his head to his cheek took another direction as others follow profoundly. Wow the fear of losing Katie’s love sure turns me to a vegetable, he thought as he puts the ring in his pocket. He walks to the sink and turns on the water, splashing some on his face. He smiled, as a memory of Katie’s smile flashes before his eyes.
Katie, his strong willed, kindhearted and loving Katie, with her beautiful voice and captivating smile. Their love wasn’t really love at first sight, in fact he remembers how she had given him so much hard time in the church, where he had been going to take advantage of the welfare department to get food and free cash for drug and alcohol, not minding if he was going to find a place to lay his head. He remembers how she had told the Reverend and the church members of his reason of coming to their church, thank God for their forgiving heart, because it was their kind hearts that had won him to Christ. He is just so grateful he is not that person anymore. Oh how much he had changed; he just knows it can only be God.
He paused in-between pouring water on his face and knew he had to tell her. He will just have to believe God not to make her hate him. He grabs a paper towel, wipes his face and hands and threw it in the trash, wishing life was that easy, to throw out everything you’ve ever done wrong, and no one ever finds out. He sighed as he made his way back into the dining room where Katie was waiting for him.
As he walks into the dining room he saw her give the waiter a reserved smile as he fills her glass. The restaurant light above her shines down her hair, giving it a highlight that makes her brunette hair look much like a wild fire red. He stares at her soft beautiful angelic face, and marveled at how the bored look and the fake smile could not put a dent on her beauty. She took a sip of her drink as the waiter walks away, putting down her glass gracefully, she runs her tongue around her lips, drawing his attention to her soft and luscious mouth. The light outlines all the sexy soft angles of her mouth, making him wish he could taste her lips. He felt a thousand butterflies in his stomach as he increase his pace towards her. Oh God help me. He thought as he walks closer. Like magic she turns her head to him, and as her gaze fell on his, her face brightens and a genuine smile break through her sexy lips, his heart skipped, he caught himself as he was about to turn back to search for who she was smiling at. He wonders how her smile can still catch him off guard despite dating her for months now. He could not help but hope he would get use to the idea that she was his, after marrying her and seeing her by his side every day. He walks to their table and sat, never taking his eyes off her, afraid this might just be the last time he sees her.
“Am sorry I was gone for long” Kelvin apologized taking her hand and kissing it gently, his eyes still fixed on her beautiful face.
“Oh that's okay, you are back now and that’s all that matters.” Katie responded never losing the sexy smile. He wishes he doesn’t have to tell her. He let go of her hand and straighten his shoulder knowing he was going to do the right thing, by letting her know.
“So where were we?” Kelvin asked, buying enough time to summon the courage to tell her.
“We were talking about the record deal, and the possibility of moving to New York. Oh! Kevin I can't wait. I know it's big and scary but it's both of us together. And I know we can face anything.” There was no doubt in his heart that Katie loves him, it's always written over her face whenever she looks at him. But he could not help but wonder how strong her love for him was? Wondering if it will be strong enough to withstand what she is about to find out about him.
“Yeah, um Katie I have to tell you something very important.” He felt a stab of pain in his heart as her smile wavered for the very first time.
“Is there something wrong?” She asked him as she searched his eyes inquiringly
“No, but I will appreciate it if you promise not to interrupt me.” He told her begging her in his heart to say no.
“Okay I promise.” Kelvin's heart sank. He willed his mouth to open as he tries to speak at first and nothing came out, he tries again.
“Hmm Katie I –
He saw Katie’s eyes go above his head before he felt the touch on his shoulder and somehow he just knew everything is about to go wrong.
He turned back, and before he saw her face he knew who it was already. Why didn’t God give him the chance to be ready for this moment. Why did things have to go this path. He wishes the ground could open and swallow him as he stares into her fury filled eyes. He looked pass her to his childhood friend, Jamie who was standing beside her protectively. He wonders why he would want to hurt him this bad.
“What's going on here Kevin. And who is she? “She asked, pointing a muscular, poorly manicured, overly painted finger at Katie.
Kevin looked back at Katie as she stared questionably into his fear stricken eyes. And wished God would take him out of this situation, because at this time only God can help him.
“Katie can you please excuse me for a while?” Kevin asked standing up slowly. He noticed people from other table staring at them, some looking at Tommy and Jamie in disgust.
“Please can we take this outside.?” Kevin asked them holding Tommy’s hand and pulling her gently as he tries to walk away.
“No Kevin, I want to know who she is and I want to know it now. “She told him, raising her voice and pulling more glace from people around. Kevin knew if he didn't handle this carefully it was going to go from bad to worse.
“Tommy I promise I will explain everything to you outside, please just don't cause a scene.” Kevin pleaded. He knows she is such a drama queen, but one place he doesn’t want her making any drama is right here in front of Katie. He stole a glance at her, and saw her looking at them confused and uneasy.
“No Kevin, I want to know who this bitch is.” As she speaks, she walks towards Katie angrily.
“What's going on Kevin?” Katie asked standing up as Kevin pulls Tommy Back
“Please Katie I Promise I will explain in a moment, just please sit down.” Katie Obeyed as he pleaded with her.
Kevin dragged hard this time pulling Tommy with him, but they didn’t get far, as Tommy is as muscular as he is.
“Don't you dear drag me Kevin, so this is what I get for taking care of you for years. I went out of town to take care of my dying mom and you dump me for this ugly thing.”
“Okay Kevin, I want to know who he is and what all this is about? Katie told him standing up.
“He! he? did she just call me a he. Am a she you blind bitch, and am his girlfriend, boyfriend stealer.
“What is he talking about? Katie asked staring at Kevin in disbelief trying hard not to believe the idea that was going through her head. Two hefty security guys walked up to them.
“What, did she just call me a he again? Tommy tried rushing at her again but the securities held her back. “Let me at that bitch, let me at her.”
“Can you all please take this outside?” The tallest Security guy ask, as he let go of Tommy.
“Am so sorry about the disturbance” Kevin told the security guy as he held Katie’s hand and lead her outside with Tommy and Jamie following closely behind him.
It was freezing, but Kevin didn’t bother putting on his jacket as he helped Katie into hers. At this point he could feel nothing. He tried hard to stop the tears from flowing, but they seem to have a mind of their own as they kept coming.
“Kevin what's going on? Katie asked as he turns away to wipe the annoying tears from his face so she won’t notice it.
“He is gay, slow bitch.” Kevin was shocked when Jamie spoke, he could hardly believe his childhood friend would want to hurt him this way. What happened to all their years of friendship. He had told him God has changed him, and that Katie was his world; how could he not understand that. How could he not believe him.
“What? Katie asked, as her eyes went from Tommy's cheap dress, then traveled through jamies poor excuse of a hair do, and finally settles on his eye's with disbelief as the whole scenario sank in.
“Yes you heard me right, he is gay and that is his girlfriend.” Jamie added
“You are gay?” Kevin Saw the disbelief, disgust, and anger in her face and knew it can only take God to bring back that love that was always in her eyes when she looks at him.
“Was, I was gay. Am so sorry Katie I tried to tell you so many times but I just couldn't. Am a changed man now, and I want you to know I love you so much and you are all that matters to me now. They were my past. that was who I was. But this is me now, the one you fell in love with. Am really a changed man Katie. And I really, really do love you.” Katie moved away from him in disgust, as he tries to touch her.
“Really, really Kevin. Am your past. My mom died and this is what I have to deal with. I came back home so you could comfort me and now am in your past. What has she done for you Kevin, what? Did she take you in when no one else did, did she steal for you when you had nothing to eat. Has she ever dumped anyone for you? Hun tell me Kevin tell me. I did all these for you Kevin, and I will do it again.” Tommy lamented.
Katie waved a taxi, and it stopped. Kevin held her back.
“Please Katie, please. You know am a changed man, you said it yourself. Please don’t leave.
“Don’t you dare touch me. You lying, pretending, heartless creature. You lied to the Reverend and the whole church just to get stuff from them, and pretended to love me just so you could get a music deal? You disgust me. Goodbye Kevin.” She told him amid endless tears. She pulled her hand off his and entered the taxi, shutting the door loudly as Kelvin tries to follow her.
“Katie please, Am so sorry. I don't want to lose you please.” He screams as the Taxi zoomed off.
Kevin ignores the valet as he tries to hand him his car key's, ignores Tommy and Jamie as they called out to him, and kept on walking towards the busy road. How is he going to live without Katie? What is he suppose to do without her beautiful smile, or her captivating voice. How is he suppose to stay sane without talking to her. He kept walking, not feeling anything except for the pain that stabs his heart like a thousand knives. Doesn’t God care what happens to him, doesn’t HE know without Katie he can’t even make the music that He said can change life's for Him. He walks on into the opposite traffic, he heard people screaming warnings to him, and could have sworn he heard his dead mom's voice calling out to him softly. But he didn’t care. How can he live without her, how can he even breathe without her. He wonders as the memory of the good times he had with Katie kept going through his head. He kept walking into the middle of the traffic, `and all of a sudden he was blinded by the strong beam of an oncoming vehicle, making him to shield his eyes. He ignores it and kept walking towards the car, as onlookers screamed in fright and the horn of the cars around him blared in warning. As he walks towards the oncoming car, he knew this must be how Jesus felt, ON THAT DAY WHEN THE COST OF LOVE WAS LIFE. Knowing he was going to die, but not giving up because he knew he will be dying for the ones he loves. Right then the realization hits him, Jesus said in the end that it was finished. Because he has taken our pain away, so when there is life there is hope. Which means if he lives he still have hope of winning Katie back. But he has to be alive first. Right then the screams and the car horns had meaning. But is he too late or is his love for Katie going to cost him his life? He wonders as the car closed in on him.
