There was a story of long ago in the far away land of Norway. A story of a Norse God whose name was Thor. He was the God of weather ~ of clouds and thunder and rain. The rains filled the rivers and lakes. They watered the crops so people could eat good food and drink good water. Thor also was a wonderful protector of others. He was known far and wide as a God of strength and concentrated effort.
Thor had three powerful helpers in taking care of the weather. The first was a hammer. When thrown, it returned to his hand of its own accord. The hammer made thunder in the sky. Thunder told the people that the rains would come.
The second rare thing he owned was called the belt of strength. When he wore it, his god-might was doubled.
The third, also very precious, was his iron gloves. When he wore the iron gloves he could use his hammer with great skill.
Thor loved the weather. He had a wonderful time making clouds, sending rain and thunder. He thought all the people loved him because he sent the rain. He didn’t realize that his thunder sometimes scared the children on the earth. He didn’t know that his fast and furious energy sometimes made people bodies uncomfortable.
One day there came to him a beautiful lady made only of love and light. She was so beautiful and kind, Thor wanted to please her very much. The Lady of Love & Light told him about how his actions felt to some of the children on the land. But Thor didn’t listen, he didn’t believe her. He got mad and sent her away.
Later, Thor kept thinking about the children. He wanted to find a way to help them feel safe and strong. Thor thought and thought but he could not figure out a way because he couldn’t understand how the children felt. He closed his eyes and asked silently for the Lady of Love & Light to help him. Immediately she came. She listened carefully and came up with a plan.
“You are to be born on the earth as a boy”, she said. “You will forget that you are Thor; so you can understand what it’s like to be a true boy”. And Thor agreed.
So, Thor came to earth as a boy named Jack. Jack lived in a desert with very loud summer storms. Just like the Lady of Love & Light predicted, Jack forgot that he was Thor. He didn’t remember that he had promised himself to feel every little sky experience. Jack could feel the shaking of the sky when the rains came. The screams of thunder hurt his ears. It shook him inside so much that it felt just like terrible fear. The feelings were very hard to tell other people about. Jack just wanted to run and hide.
Thor (as Jack of course) believed his courage and safety had to come from outside of himself. He thought if he could hide from the noise and vibrations of the storms, he would feel safe. Soon, he saw it was not true. He then thought his mom could make the scary bad feelings go away. Sometimes that worked. Then Jack found himself being scared about other things too. He realized he couldn’t always have his mom around to help him.
One night, Jack woke up and found himself alone. He heard thunder outside and was very scared. Jack was tired of being scared. Jack was so sick of hiding from the storms so he cried out in a very loud voice. He cried out to nobody in particular. He just cried out, “HELP ME FIND MY WAY”.
All of a sudden he felt (yes that is correct~ felt) a light all around him. Even though he knew he should be scared, he was not. For some reason he became very quiet. His body relaxed. He could feel his own breathing. In his mind’s eye, Jack saw the same beautiful “Lady of Love & Light” who helped Thor come to earth as Jack instead of just Thor. The Lady of Love & Light simply smiled at him. He was able to go back to sleep.
A few nights later, Jack had a dream. He dreamed about Thor the God of Thunder and Weather and Rain. In his dream Thor came to Jack and said “your name is not only Jack, it is Jack of Thor. I have come to teach you”.
Thor showed Jack of Thor his magic tools, He showed him how he put on his gloves and belt. He showed him how he threw his hammer and it came back to him. He showed Jack of Thor how he made weather for the people.
When Jack woke up, he could only remember parts of the dream. Weirdly enough, he felt stronger and braver than he had in a long time.
Every night, for what seemed like a very long time, Jack of Thor had visits from Thor and the Lady of Love & Light.
The Lady of Love & Light taught Jack of Thor how to relax his body and feel himself standing strong on the earth. She said he had to breathe in on purpose and say “I am safe”. Then she said to breathe out on purpose and say “I am strong”. Jack of Thor practiced and practiced for what seemed like forever until he woke up in the morning
Thor taught Jack of Thor to feel and see his own magic tools deep inside his body and his imagination. Jack of Thor looked but didn’t feel anything and thought Thor was teasing him. Soon he discovered he had to be very quiet, concentrate, and pretend that he could actually sit inside his own heart. Who could ever do such a thing? Jack of Thor learned that he certainly could if he practiced and believed.
Once Jack of Thor got good at sitting inside his own heart he began to look around. First he found his hammer. It was beautiful and powerful. It was made of metal and precious stones. It had the word “TRUTH” carved on the handle. Then he found the belt. When he put the belt on, he knew that Thor and the Lady of Love & Light somehow were actually inside the belt making him powerfully strong. Finally, the iron gloves showed themselves to Jack of Thor. Believe it or not these gloves put themselves on Jack of Thor’s hands. Jack could tell right away there were many lessons in the gloves that he must learn. Somehow the gloves could show him how to use the hammer in helpful instead of hurtful ways.
Night after night, Jack of Thor, the Lady of Love & Light and Thor worked together. They became like an invisible family that lived in the heart of Jack of Thor.
One night, when the time was right, Thor came to Jack of Thor to tell him he was ready. “Ready for what?” Jack of Thor asked. Thor told him the truth of his beginnings that he actually was Thor deep inside. Thor showed him how it was time to bring his Thor-self out into his day to day life. Thor instructed Jack to practice using his hammer, belt and gloves while he was awake.
The next morning Jack of Thor awakened. He remembered all of it. He knew he actually could go into his own heart, find his own magic tools, and live his life with truth, strength and bravery.
In his imagination he put on his belt and gloves, he took his hammer and began his day knowing he was strong and safe. He practiced standing strong on the earth. He breathed in and out on purpose, telling himself “I am safe” “I am strong”
Later in the day, clouds began to form and a storm was predicted. Jack of Thor could still feel it. He knew his body may be still be uncomfortable. However, Jack knew he could handle it now; because, after all he was Thor.
