THE STUBBORN CARROT
Tucked away in a little corner of the world, lived a little girl with her father who was a vegetable farmer and her mother who saw to all the chores of the household. This little girl was very helpful both in the house and on the farm. Every morning when the birds were rising the little girl would accompany her father into the fields and do what was required. Water the vegetables , help father turn the soil if necessary and build shelter for the various vegetables when it was cold.
Growing up on the farm was exciting for the little girl as every day brought joy, laughter and lots of exploring. Lulu was the girl’s name. Lulu loved taking walks around the farm , but there was a special place that Lulu loved to visit. This place was the spot where the big Oak tree grew. In this huge Oak tree a family of swallows lived. Lulu had watched this family begin their lives in this magical tree. Mummy swallow along with daddy swallow would fly to the tree every day and build their nest, slowly but surely. To Lulu it seemed like mummy and daddy swallow would agree or disagree on how the nest should be built. She would laugh quietly as she watched this secret communication between the birds.
At sunset Lulu would run home and tell her parents about mummy and daddy swallows’ argument. Her stories were always exciting to hear. She would inform mother about the baby carrots that she imagined would be smiling at her whilst she gave them water. The butterflies that would fly around her to welcome her each morning, and the birds that would fly to and fro across the vegetable patch would sing a lovely song to her to thank her for the little puddles of water they got to drink from and splash around in play. All these sights brought so much happiness to Lulu.
Every vegetable that was planted on the farm, be it the potatoes , cabbage , green beans or tomatoes had a special place in Lulu’s circle of imaginary friends , because Lulu found time every day to see they all received enough water for the day. Every new seedling that would appear from under the earth she would welcome to the vegetable patch and introduce these to the older members of the patch.
This was Lulu’s routine from Sunday to Sunday. She did not complain, in fact she enjoyed the work around the farm and house because it made her feel all grown up and proud of herself that she was able to do things big people could do.
A few days had past by and Lulu did not feel well. This did not stop Lulu helping her Mum or Dad. In the vegetable patch the vegetables noticed something very unusual. Lulu did not greet them and the birds noticed Lulu was not putting extra water so they could have their daily splash in the vegetable patch. This was very strange, it was not like her to overlook such things. The swallow family were so busy getting food for their babies that they did not notice anything different.
Each new day after this strange behaviour from Lulu the vegetables noticed that this was becoming a common thing. The days that followed the vegetable patch in the field noticed that things were not the same. Water became less and less. No more bird splashes and no more welcoming of new vegetables . There was a lot of chatter going on in the vegetable patch. The green beans were so busy climbing their bean poles they could not really hear what was going on down below on the ground. The cabbages noticed their leaves were wilting and became very sad and wondered why Lulu was not giving them enough water to drink. The Tomatoes felt they were becomimg too weak to cling to the plants that held them up. While all this was happening on the ground Daddy Swallow had just flown back to the nest and informed mummy Swallow about the chatter going on amongst the vegetables. Mummy Swallow could not think why Lulu was not doing what she normally did.
Mother and Father noticed that Lulu had become very quiet on her return from her days work . She did not tell them her wonderful stories they were so used to hearing at the dinner table. Both mother and father questioned each other as to why Lulu was so quiet, or maybe she had wished she had friends to play with instead of seeing to the vegetables and helping mum cook and clean the house. Eventually mum decided to ask Lulu if something was wrong. Lulu had told her mother that her throat was sore and her nose felt blocked, that she was so upset she could not smell the fresh air she smelt when she woke up in the morning. Mum told Lulu that she needed to rest because she was getting ill. Lulu did what mum told her and slept that morning. In fact Lulu slept throughout the day. Food time for Lulu became difficult. Work around the farm Lulu was not able to do because she became so sick she was not able to do anything. Mother was worried and asked dad to travel to town to buy the necessary medicine. With dad gone and Lulu unable to see to the vegetables on the farm , mother too was not able to see to the vegetables because Lulu now had a terrible fever. The vegetables did not know what was happening, everything was looking bleak on the farm. Mother decided she would cook Lulu soup as soup was always the best thing to give someone who was not well. Mother grabbed her basket and set out to the vegetable patch. She picked a few potatoes and walked across to the carrot patch. Mother pulled at the largest carrot she could see sticking out of the ground. The carrot held on so tight to the roots of the other carrots because carrot did not want to leave his place in the ground. While pulling at the roots of the other carrots that were feeling the pain was heard amongst the other vegetables as well as the butterflies flying by and the swallows perched in their nest. Carrot was stubborn and would not allow mother to take him out of the ground. Eventually mother decided to leave the carrot and go prepare Lulu a potato soup.
Night time had come and father arrived with the medicine, telling mother the doctor had said to feed Lulu with lots of vegetable soup. Mother told father she had went out to the vegetables and in the carrot patch the carrot could not come out of the ground. Father was surprised and said he would check in the morning. During the evening under the light of the moon Tomato had asked carrot what was all the commotion about with mother and him. Carrot was angry, Carrot was so in no mood to talk to anyone. The carrots began to demand an answer from big carrot because they felt they too needed an answer because big carrot had left them hurting all over. Big carrot still ignored the other vegetable. The moaning and complaining became so much that big carrot blurted out his reasons for not allowing mother to remove him from the ground. Big carrot told the other vegetables that the ground was his home and he was not going to be taken out of his dark hole that he enjoyed so much. He too told them that he was so big he wanted to grow into the biggest carrot ever and life was just too good at the moment. The cabbages laughed at big carrot and told him that that was not how life was on the vegetable farm. They told big carrot that eventually all the vegetable had to leave their holes and go to this big place called the Green Grocer where humans came and bought them in order to feed their families. This made Big carrot more angry and told all the vegetables they were not clever like him because he was never going to the Green Grocer for people to buy him. That night the vegetables did not sleep because the new plants heard this and were so frightened that sleep was not as important as finding a way to put an end to this journey they all had to make eventually. The days that followed were not easy because the vegetables were always arguing amongst themselves. Mother Swallow was so worried about the outcome down on the ground because food became scarce for her family too. None of the vegetables allowed her near them as they feared she would peck at them now because there was nothing to share .Mother Swallow decided to fly past the kitchen window to see if mother had thrown crumbs out the window. She sat and waited patiently.
Mother Swallow heard a cry coming from the inside of the house and hopped closer to see. The was Lulu lying in the bed and mother sitting next to her and crying softly. It broke mother swallow’s heart to see Lulu lying there . Just then the bedroom door opened and in walked father. Father had just returned from the vegetable patch with some tomatoes, a cabbage and a few beans for mother to cook soup for lulu. Once again the carrots could not come out of the ground, why, why , why. Hearing this mother swallow flew back to the nest quickly and told daddy swallow what she had just heard. Daddy swallow was shocked and flew quickly to the vegetable patch. He flew to and fro to and fro over the vegetables to tell them about Mummy swallows adventure. The butterflies settled themselves on the leaves they could find . The tomatoes turned their heads up to hear what daddy swallow had to say. The cabbages started crying on hearing this sad news. Big carrot thought this was a trap and shouted at the vegetables to not listen to daddy swallow. Eventually one brave cabbage told big carrot to keep quiet and listen to what she had to say. Brave cabbage told big carrot and all the other vegetables that were behaving badly that being selfish and not being able to share was the wrong thing to do. Brave cabbage told all the vegetables that it was Lulu that helped them grow as big as they were. It was Lulu who sheltered them from the cold weather when it was necessary so the only right thing to do was to help Lulu too. Brave cabbage had told the vegetables that in order for Lulu to get better she needed the vegetables in the patch to give her the vitamins and nutrients she needed to get better and stronger and by allowing father or mother to remove you from the ground was not because they were foolish no not at all, but it was a very brave thing to do as well as kind thing too because friends help each other and Lulu is their friend . Soft mumbles were heard around the vegetable farm as the vegetables discussed amongst themselves what Brave cabbage had told them. The vegetables had a lot to think about that night and they went to bed very early.
Daddy swallow dashed down to the vegetables swiftly to inform the vegetables that father was heading their way and he had a basket in his hand. The baby vegetables were so scared they could not stand still they were bending back and forth. Tomatoes could not watch this silly behaviour and told the baby vegetables to behave and stand up tall for no one was going to pick them out of the ground . The humans are not bad people as big carrot had said . Humans were kind and gentle and allowed baby vegetables to grow up strong, breathe the air, have a chance to see seasons come and go and most of all make friends with everything that the vegetables shared the earth with. Yes their time would come eventually for them to leave the hole they grew out from and yes make the journey to the Green Grocer, but not just yet. That day the stubborn big carrot saw life on the farm differently. He had thought greatly on what Brave cabbage had said as well as the tomatoes. Big carrot stood tall and proud when he saw father standing in front of him. Father bend down over big carrot and whispered that he was very sorry to choose carrot and a few of his friends to be removed from the vegetable patch for Lulu’s soup and all he wanted was to have lulu better in a hurry as he could see the vegetables were struggling here in the ground because they were not getting enough water to drink and grow and likewise the butterflies were unable to get the nectar from the vegetable flowers , no worms could be found to feed the birds too. The big stubborn carrot felt so bad for not allowing mother to pull him out of the hole earlier because he did not know that while lulu watered the vegetable the puddles of water around the vegetable patch would let the birds drink water so she was helping them too. The stubborn carrot knew he was wrong and this behaviour was not how he wanted the little vegetables to do when they grew up. The stubborn carrot knew that everything on earth had a purpose, just like the trees gave shade and shelter to people and birds, just as the flowers made everything look beautiful and feed the bees, carrot too had a purpose. Carrot knew he had to make things right. Father pulled gently at carrots leaves to loosen the soil that protected the vegetables, the carrot was still held firm, again father pulled and twisted the carrot gently. This time the carrot came out of the hole without a fuss. Father dusted the soil of the carrot and placed him in the basket. All eyes were on father as he walked away from the patch toward the house. A few of the young vegetables were not pleased with carrot allowing father to remove him from the ground because they had felt that carrot had said he wanted to stay in his hole and not go to the green grocer.
Back at the farm house mother washed and chopped all the vegetables father had brought from the vegetable patch. She cooked a lovely vegetable soup for Lulu. Lulu became stronger and stronger, it was not long and Lulu was back on her feet feeling healthy and strong. The watering of all the vegetables Lulu was able to do again, and mother swallow and father swallow were happy to see Lulu again, in fact they chirped so loudly that the baby swallows popped their heads out of the nest to see what the fuss was about . Lulu was so pleased to see the baby birds she gave each one a name. Lulu ran home to tell her mother and father the good news. Not everyone was happy on the farm as Lulu was , the baby carrots were still upset with Stubborn carrot . Green bean decided it was time to explain to the young carrots why carrot the reason had allowed father to remove him from his hole. Life is all about sharing and helping each other. We all have to learn to help each other, by carrot agreeing to leave he helped all the young carrots to have the chance to grow up into sweet juicy carrots, and for you to grow into that sweet juicy carrot you need space in the ground to grow, so that hole that kept Stubborn carrot safe and warm is the space you need to grow. The young carrots looked at each other and realised that was the most kindest thing that carrot had done. From that moment all the young vegetables learnt a valuable lesson that caring, sharing and helping each other was the most beautiful gift to give each other.
