ROB AND GRAMPA'S TRIP ON THE TRAIN
Born 1942, F, from Clearfield, utah, United StatesROB AND GRAMPA'S TRIP ON THE TRAIN
My sons, Max and Rob, loved my Father (The Old Man), unconditionally. When Rob was around nine or ten, I let him go with my Father on the train to San Jose, California. I knew my brother, Stan Jr., would be picking them up, and my son would have an adventure he would probably never forget.
It was in the springtime, riding the train through Nevada, leaving Reno, and ascending up and into the rocky mountains, through the high Sierra's, over a snowy Donner's Pass. I knew he would love going from car to car, finally reaching the Dome car, getting a full view of all the spectacular beauty of the mountains. Then having a nice breakfast or lunch in the dining car, while looking out the window, as it all passed by. I was sure it would be pure enjoyment, as well as educational for him.
As they arrived in California, my Brother was there waiting as the train pulled into the station. He picked them up and took them to his condo in San Jose, where a large inviting pool awaited them. My other Brother Jack and his family also lived close by, so their visit was exceptional.
They went to Santa Cruz, enjoyed the ocean and the beach, as well as all the amenities on the boardwalk. Dined on the Wharf, having a bowl of clam chowder, with lots of sour dough bread, and eating outside, as he fed some of the swarming seagulls.
While in San Jose, on another day, my brother took them to “Great America”, a fun park similar to Lagoon, here in Utah. Rob was dying to ride the Roller Coaster, but he wanted the old man to ride it with him. He begged and pleaded, until my Dad finally gave in. Up the ramp, into the seat, and strapped down nice and tight. Up and up they went climbing, finally reaching the top, then descending down a long, long hill, faster and faster, around many a quick grinding turn. As they climbed up and over so many hills and curves, going at exceptional speeds, the old man opened his mouth and let out an excruciating scream as they came around another curve, and a swift whirl wind of air swiftly removed the old man's dentures, and the teeth departed to some unknown place far below to the ground. The old man was beside himself, wondering what in the world he was going to do without his teeth. They finally shut down the roller coaster ride, and each employee hunted through rocks and gravel, finally finding the teeth.
Being with my father, the old man, was an adventure every day. This was just one of many stories in my head.
