LUST IN THE DUST
Born 1942, F, from Clearfield, utah, United States“Lust In The Dust”
It was fall, with all the colors in their fullest glory, and the Utah deer hunt barely started, I got a telephone call, from one of my dearest of friends. She told me, she was here in Utah, and asked if she could stay with me for seven days. I immediately told her yes, she was always welcome to stay with me, but “When did she get here”, and “Why was she here”? She said, she would tell me all, when she arrived, and she should be at my house within an hour. I was shocked and surprised to say the least. I knew something was going on.
She arrived in a brand new Motor Home, with a friend she had known for many years, and yes he was married, and she was recently divorced. They came inside, and she was laughing as usual, while coming through the door, always so much fun to be around. I had known her since I was 14, and he and her went to Jr. High School together, then he left and entered the service. They were in love, and her mother forbid her to write him letters. Eventually, her family moved to another state, after she graduated and was then twenty. He came home from the service and met and married his wife. Although, according to him, in his heart he still loved my friend.
He worked on base, and my friend went through the base locator and found his number. They called each other and corresponded for many years. Every time she visited me or her best friend, she wanted to drive by his house and hock her horn, so he would know it was her, that she was here again. She was a teenager again.....Then she soon would meet with him.
He sent her beautiful cards and letters, telling her the love he had for her, and wanted to leave his wife and marry her. She divorced her husband, not once, but twice because she was always in love with this guy and she didn't love her husband, although he made big money and was good to her. Then, she bought a plane ticket and flew here to be with him again, as she had often done, so many years in the past. Now, they would have a forbidden week of total bliss together, so my friend thought. She brought all the lovely cards and letters with her, and showed them all to me. After reading them all, and having the feeling she had toward him, anyone may have done the same damn thing she did.
She flew into the Salt Lake Airport, he picked her up in the motor home, and after one night of a romantic interlude or just plain “Lust in the Dust”, he gets nervous, and wants to go home. My friend was devastated, to say the least. Her heart was broke, although she didn't show it, while he was there in my kitchen. He left, and the tears started to roll down her cheek. Then, the next day all the sadness turned to anger.
How could she have been such a fool? She got on the phone and called his sister, whom she had also know for many years, and even his mother. One of them called his wife, and gave her my number, then she called my friend. “Oh dear God”, I thought. The wife wanted my friend to meet her in a restaurant. She was very nice and cordial, so she said, yes, she would meet with her, but my friend, also wanted her other best friend, who lived here, to go with her. I didn't want to get involved in this way.
My friend was so mad, she took all the cards and letters with her, so she could show the wife and she could see the truth for herself, that she wasn't making anything up. It cost a lot for my friend to fly into Salt Lake, and was humiliating for her, by not having enough money to rent a Motel, or have a place to stay. I know she was pissed. The secret was out, and now the wife would soon know everything. I was on pins and needles, anxiously waiting for her to return, telling me what had happened, and with emotions hot and running wild, could the wife have brought a gun? Everything was going through my mind. I wondered why I put myself in this situation...........oh well, she was a dear friend to me, and I've got to stand by her, no matter what happens.
About three hours later, here she came. She told me about the wife, short, heavyset, dyed brown hair, in a short type of dutch cut, with no make up. She looked tired, and worn out with stress. When the wife read all the letters and cards, she knew what had been going on for years. Two days passed, then another phone call came. Again, it was the wife, she wanted to speak with my friend. I asked my friend, if I should tape the conversation, as him and his wife worked the same job on weekends.
Yes, old chicken ass, would be there, she said, yes, go ahead, tape it. So I did. The wife told my friend to stay on the line, as she was going to put hubby on the other phone. The wife had a kind of redneck slang, in her words, maybe she was from the south somewhere. Then the conversation started:
Wife: Well, she said to her hubby, so you wanted her to come here so you could taste the forbidden fruit again. I've seen all the cards and letters you wrote, so there is no need to lie about it. And I seen that you didn't take your sleeping bag, so I knew you wasn't deer hunting. You had to lie about that too. So do you love her or not?
Husband: Yes, I do love her, but it's a different kind of love.
Wife: So what do you want to do? Are you going back with her?
Husband: Well, I don't know....
Wife: You thought it was so much fun, and you wanted to have a good time, and taste the forbidden fruit. You better say right here and now, what you plan on doing. I'll even pack your clothes for you, if that's what you want.
Husband: Well, there ain't gonna be anymore “Good Times”.
My Friend: We have loved each other for over 40 years.
Wife: So, what did you do, for one night, have sex and that was it?
My Friend: We did it twice! In one night!
It went on and on, I recorded it all, then set it to background music and narrated it. Every time we played it over and over, we'd laugh and laugh. It may not have been funny, yet it was funny. The wife never left her husband, and he never got in touch with my friend again. Yet, to this day, my friend still has feelings for him. She returned home, and yes, remarried her ex husband for the third time, and tripped while going down the stairs inside the Mormon Temple. I said, to my friend, “I wonder why”? She just kept laughing........
