OH, THE NIGHT LIFE!
Born 1942, F, from Clearfield, utah, United States"OH, THE NIGHT LIFE!"
There were several of us, in our twenties, who loved to hit the night spots and dance. Little did I realize, at the time, what a great learning experience this would become. We just wanted to have fun. It wasn't for the drinking, (although, we would all chip in and order a picture of beer) it was the hot music, the comradery, and just plain fun. We'd laugh till our sides ached, and yes there was also much group therapy too.
I can remember us all getting together and doing each other's hair, we did have beautiful hair do's. Then out would come the latest perfumes from our purses, and the newest make-up tips were shared. We knew we were looking good, and we'd decide where the hot jam sessions would be, and go to that night spot. If it wasn't like we wanted it to be, we'd leave and go to another hopping place, with good music, laughing all the way.
Some of the girls were married, and bored, or not happy. The rest of us were the gay divorcee's, or just single. What we didn't realize was the guys there were not looking for a beer to drink, or there to necessarily dance, they were there to score. Just as a hunter goes after a deer in the forest. Since the Air Force Base was close by, there were always Airmen looking for a good time, plus all the others, who were mostly losers.
It was a time when back room butcher and coat hanger abortions were the norm, and the contraception pill did not exist. A time when being pregnant and not married was a social and family disgrace.
One of the girls was so miserable in her marriage. It was hard for her to believe this tall and very handsome man came over to our table and asked her to dance. She wasn't that pretty, and a little over weight, and that's all it took. She fell hard and fast for this guy. He was also married and had a few kids, as did she. Within a few months she became pregnant. She was in love with him, and met him whereever she could, to be with him.
The baby was born, her husband naturally thought it was his, but questioned his looks were not like any of the other children they had. Eventually, they got a divorce, and her husband had suspicions, in fact, I think he knew it wasn't his.
One day, while backing out of her driveway, their love child, her little two year old son, was playing behind the car and she accidentally backed over him and killed him. It was a very sad and tragic event, which I knew she would never get over. Later on in her life, she developed diabetes, and died from the disease.
Another one started going with one of the guys in the band. She too, got pregnant, the father did nothing to help her. She did meet another very fine man, who married her and adopted her child, and they had more children and are still together to this day.
Then there was another gal, who's husband had a professional job. She always knew where he was and would join up with the rest of us if she could. She met an airman from the base, and had a rip roaring afair with him, that lasted a very long time. She stayed with her husband, had a couple of kids, but became hooked on pills and booze, then finally became sober and clean.
Our lives all took different turns, some not always for the best, but all learning experiences.
